As we bid farewell to 2023, the HBCU Business Deans Roundtable celebrates a year of extraordinary resilience and growth amidst a rapidly evolving business landscape. This year has been a testament to our adaptability and commitment to excellence in business education. Enhanced Digital Integration We embraced the power of technology, seamlessly integrating digital tools into our educational and administrative frameworks. This shift not only brought efficiency but also ensured our programs were more accessible than ever, bridging gaps and opening doors for a diverse range of students and educators. Adaptive Learning Models Flexibility became our cornerstone as we implemented hybrid learning models. By balancing in-person and virtual engagements, we catered to varied learning preferences and situations, ensuring continuity and quality of education regardless of external circumstances. Strengthening Community Connections Our commitment to community engagement intensified. We deepened ties with local businesses and communities, creating partnerships that enriched our academic programs. It defines our purpose, our core values, and what we're here to achieve. And then there's the vision. Think of it as our destination—the big picture of what we want to become. It's aspirational, inspiring us to strive for excellence and to keep pushing forward. So, when we ask ourselves what our school mission and vision mean to us, we're really asking: How do these guiding principles shape our daily actions and decisions? How do they influence the way we interact with students, parents, and each other? And most importantly, how do they help us create a better learning environment for all? It's that time of year where I have to submit my end-of-year annual report to the university, and in retrospect I've had both a wonderful and busy year. Of course, while I always provide context and description when submitting things in the university system (translating my work in strategic ways), inevitably this entire process seems to get boiled down to an act of accounting. So, excluding my traditional faculty responsibilities (e.g., courses taught, articles published, committees, etc.), I took stock of my 2023 by-the-numbers and it ended up something like this: 60+ - Led more than 60 Faculty Professional Development Workshops at Indiana University as part of the Digital Gardener Initiative 30+ - Delivered more than 30 external speaking engagements: -       15 Invited Talks (7 Keynotes & 8 Invited Talks) -       10 Invited Faculty Development Workshops -       7 Podcast, Webinar, and/or Invited Interview appearances -       6 Conference Presentations -       1 Full-Day Faculty Development Program 2 Notable Awards/Recognitions -       Recipient: Hypothesis Social Learning Innovator Award -       Invited: Adobe Digital Edge Awards Judge {And for good measure: Coached 2 Volleyball teams (5th grade boys and 4th grade girls) and ran a week-long grade school Summer Boys Volleyball Camp.} Definitely a busy year. Looking forward to seeing what 2024 has in store!

At the beginning of each school year, our K-12 and GSE colleagues unite to get into as many classrooms as we can across our 16 schools to celebrate "bright spots" that align with our design principles: equity, personalization, authentic work, & collaborative design. We focus in particular on teachers new to our organization to signal that they belong and have something meaningful to contribute to our learning community from DAY ONE! 🎒🪄 The purpose of "bright spotting" is also to disrupt the following notions too prevalent in schools~ ❌ We get better by mostly focusing on things that aren't working and trying to fix them ❌ Colleagues and leaders observe our practice primarily to provide critique ❌ New teachers should learn from veteran teachers, but not vice-versa At HTH, we flip this on the head and focus on 1) learning from "bright spots", or what is already working, 2) getting into each other's classrooms often to learn from and celebrate one another's practice, and 3) cultivating a non-hierarchical, reciprocal learning community where we can all learn from each other (regardless of years of experience, roles/titles, or positionality). Our annual bright-spotting tradition began many moons ago with our HTH co-founder and GSE President Emeritus Rob Riordan, also affectionately referred to as Yoda and the Emperor of Rigor. Rob has a beautiful way of finding something to celebrate in each and every classroom and holding tremendous high positive regard for teachers. 🚀 Highlights from Three National Education Conferences 🚀 Last week, I had the opportunity to attend three impactful national conferences that brought together education leaders and innovators from across the country. Here are some key takeaways: 1. At AASA, The School Superintendents Association, Prof. Josh Cowen (MSU) delivered a compelling presentation on the negative impacts of vouchers, comparing them to the detrimental effects of natural disasters on communities. White House staff member Robert Gordon highlighted that 30% of ESSER funds have been allocated towards academic recovery, surpassing the federal requirement of at least 20%. Maggie Cicco from Edunomics Lab at Georgetown University provided insights on "Five Major K-12 Funding Trends to Watch," including the ESSER ‘cliff,’ declining enrollment and state funding, and shifts in the education labor market and special education costs. 2. At the National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE) convening, I had the privilege of introducing Accelerate's state policy initiatives to 30 new state board of education members alongside other sponsors. Special shoutout to Arkansas Department of Education state board chair Sarah Moore, who is serving as NASBE board chair. 3. Lastly, at the Education Commission of the States (ECS)#NationalForum on Ed Policy, I connected with partners and stakeholders, including Deans for Impact (DFI), Rodel Foundation, Burbio.com, two of our state partners: Delaware Department of Education, and the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce. One standout session was the "Partner Roundtable" led by Alan Safran from Saga Education and Monica B. from University of Chicago Education Lab on scaling high-impact tutoring. This session was highly attended, including 18 different state education officials, with a lively Q&A. These conferences were a testament to the incredible work being done in the education sector and the collaborative efforts to enhance learning experiences for all students.
