•Silage is a fermented feed resulting from the storage of high moisture crops under anaerobic conditions in a silo. The process of silage making includes cutting fresh (green) fodder, compacting it, and storing and fermenting it under controlled conditions in a silo, where air cannot come in contact with the silage. Any green forage crop can be made into silage. ⏺️The goal of making silage is to preserve forage nutrients for feeding at a later date. This is accomplished by the conversion (by fermentation) of plant sugars to organic acids. The resulting acidity effectively "pickles" the forage. ⏺️Types of Silages •High-moisture silage (< 30% dry matter) •Medium-moisture silage (30 – 40% dry matter) •Low-moisture silage ( < 30% dry matter) Lactic Acid:Acetic Acid Ratio - Good silage fermentations usually have a ratio of these acids of about 2.5 to 3.0. ⏺️Silage inoculants contain one or more strains of lactic acid bacteria, and the most common is Lactobacillus plantarum. ⏺️Understanding the process of corn silage fermentation and starch availability Phase 1: Aerobic phase (0 to 2 days after ensiling). ...
