Growers are seeing multiple benefits from the John Deere Operation Center. Erin Hightower, RDO Agronomist, draws from her own experience to explain how the technology enhances efficiency and productivity. "I visited an onion grower who learned how to monitor equipment and use its data to forecast seed planting quality. I assisted him in remotely accessing the display on his planter tractor. Imagine our surprise when we saw that the planter said it was set up to plant corn -- not onions. In the Northwest region, corn is planted significantly deeper than onions. If onions are planted too deep, then their bulbs may not develop correctly due to reduced access to air and sunlight," Luckily, Erin and the grower were able to update the planter in real time and save a year's worth of crop failure. That's just one win from the JD Operation Center. Read more on the benefits this technology can offer your farm: https://lnkd.in/gptybnQb

🌾 🚜 Exciting results from our 2023 field trials! 🌱💡 In our quest for continuous improvement and also to validate the impact of DynaCrop prescription maps, we conducted several field trials in 2023 with our partner farms in Czechia. Here are some of the key findings: 🌾 Variable seeding of spring barley: Higher seeding rates led to better yields, especially in medium and low-yield zones. In financial terms, the highest seeding rate provided an extra €183/ha compared to the lowest rate. 💦 Pre-seeding variable N rate application: Increasing pre-seeding nitrogen rates did not significantly impact yield, suggesting potential cost savings by reducing the N rate saving of approximately 20-40 EUR/ha. 🥔 Variable planting of potatoes: Adjusting planting distances based on yield potential improved yields, with the highest benefit in medium and low-yield zones. This strategy resulted in approximately €500/ha extra in profits. 🗺️ We used our DynaCrop system to create prescription maps, enabling tailored input applications. They were created based on the historical satellite imagery from past seasons to evaluate crop-specific yield potential for each field. 🌱 Our trials showcased the power of variable rate technology, allowing precise application of inputs, optimizing resource utilization and reducing costs. However, we acknowledge that external factors like drought and field-specific characteristics influenced our results. We're committed to continuous improvement and will validate our findings with more extensive data in the coming seasons. 🗓 If you're interested in testing variable rate technology, obtaining prescription maps, or exploring how our solutions can benefit your farming practice, contact us today: https://lnkd.in/eDd89DCC Read the full article here 👉 https://lnkd.in/dPKWcseA #PrecisionAgriculture #FieldTrials2023

Huge congratulations to Lav Khot, Bernardita Sallato, Steve Mantle, Troy Peters, and Ananth Kalyanaraman for obtaining the 2024 Washington Tree Fruit Research Commission Grant Award for Technology with the project Smart Apple Orchard: Technology Testbed and Demonstration Site. The WTFRC-funded Smart Orchard initiative has been a great success in bringing together public-private technology developers to address grower-needed solutions. Setting the Smart Orchard in a commercial orchard has been key to providing a realistic testbed for the sensors/technologies evaluation and enhancing the extension and outreach to the agricultural community. Stemming from these past efforts, the team will now focus on a site to be established at a centrally located cooperating grower block near Mattawa, Washington, to continue these efforts tied directly to relevant Washington State University-lead efforts by the team through the AgAID Institute, AgWeatherNet, Center for Precision & Automated Agricultural Systems, innov8.ag, and WSU Tree Fruit Research and Extension. The team will continue to push for technology evaluation, through this and affiliate projects in the testbed, including 1) environmental indicators monitoring and cold/heat stress mitigation, 2) soil and plant nutrient mapping and management, 3) irrigation automation, 4) precision chemical applications, 5) crop mapping and blossom/yield estimation, and 6) robotic pruning/thinning, weed management, etc. in the next three years. #SmartOrchard #EmpowerGrowers #DecisionSupportSystems

Ohio farm custom rates 2024 By Barry Ward, Eric Richer, John Barker and Amanda Bennett, OSU Extension Farming is a complex business and many Ohio farmers utilize outside assistance for specific farm-related work. This option is appealing for tasks requiring specialized equipment or technical expertise. Often, having someone else with specialized tools perform tasks is more cost effective and saves time. Farm work completed by others is often referred to as “custom farm work” or more simply, “custom work.” A “custom rate” is the amount agreed upon by both parties to be paid by the custom work customer to the custom work provider. Custom rates increased for the majority of field operations in 2024 as compared to surveyed rates in 2022 but the increases did vary by operation. Examples include an increase of 6% for Planting Corn (30 Inch Rows with Fertilizer Application), 5.6% for Harvesting Corn (Combine, Grain Cart, Haul Local to Farm), 21% for Spraying (Self-Propelled Sprayer, Crop Protection Chemicals) and 24% for Field Cultivator.… Continue reading https://lnkd.in/gUMJqG4Z
