Last year, Grow Remote hosted social connection events for remote workers across Ireland, Portugal and the UK. We designed these events in response to research highlighting social isolation as a challenge for remote workers. According to a 2023 FRS report, 30% of remote workers say their biggest challenge is “less colleague interaction” while a further 28% it is “switching off from work” is their main challenge.* This month, we are hosting various social events for remote workers including after work drinks, yoga, brunch, hiking, a tour of an art gallery and coffee meetups. 🌍Remote Work Real Talk🌍 Last night's "Thank Crunchie It's Friday" beer unexpectedly turned into a fantastic opportunity! I met the lovely Dónal Kearney who was hosting a meetup for Grow Remote at my local pub. Nosey (this word is such a 'Derryism' basically it means unapologetically curious) Mary called over to his table to introduce myself to learn more about his event. First impression: "OMG, why am I only meeting you now?!" 🤯 I was genuinely impressed by what I discovered. So, here's what I found out, Growremote is an Irish organisation dedicated to promoting remote work across Ireland. Their mission is to make remote work accessible and sustainable, benefiting both workers and communities. So, how do they do this? ✨ They organise events and meetups to connect remote workers and employers. ✨ They provide access to resources and training to help individuals and companies transition to remote work. ✨ They collaborate with various stakeholders to create remote work opportunities. On a personal note, after 3 years of fully remote work, I've found it challenging to build boundaries, maintain work-life balance, and gain remote working survival skills. Having a support network like this could have really accelerated my transition but I guess that network can build and grow now! I’m sharing this to raise awareness among my Irish and overseas network who have remote workers here in the green isle. I was so lucky to stumble (not literally)across Donal, so I hope you read this post and find this helpful! So, if you’re: 👩💻 A remote worker needing to meet like-minded people 🏢 An office worker considering remote work but needing insights and skill-building opportunities 👥 A leader managing remote teams and wanting to connect with peers in similar situations 🏢 A business aiming to help your remote workers feel more connected to a community. Reach out to Donal and check out the two amazing programmes available on their website! These programs are fully funded by various Irish bodies—they're free!

Community in the Remote Work Era In my experience, remote workers often crave more than just flexibility—they’re seeking real connections. And not just in their personal lives but also at work. Many find a better work-life integration while traveling, creating routines that blend work, hobbies, and community. Imagine this scenario: ☀️ Morning work meetings 🍴 Lunch with a friend 🏄♂️ Sports or activities in the afternoon 💻 A few emails before heading out for dinner 🎉 Evening drinks with fellow digital nomads This is just one example. Others might start their day surfing, travel with kids, or design a routine that works best for them. What stands out is the way communities are forming around shared interests—fitness, music, dance, yoga, mindfulness, and more. Increasingly, remote workers from different backgrounds gather in the same location, building meaningful connections while working alongside one another. This isn’t just a trend—it’s a shift toward a future where work and life integrate seamlessly with human connection at the center. How do you build community in your remote work journey? #DigitalNomad #RemoteWork #FutureOfWork #WorkLifeBalance #Community #Connection We Work Remotely Remote.co Nomad List Digital Nomad World Workfrom

When venturing into world of remote work for the first time, choosing the right destination can make all the difference. 𝘞𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬 𝘢𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘦, 𝘥𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘭𝘺? This was a question asked in the Remote Work Spain Facebook group this morning, by somebody who has just secured their first fully remote position. And it's a completely understandable concern, because whatever else going to work in somebody else's office may have meant, there would have been other people around. Not people you chose or had anything particularly in common with, but... people! Ready-made watercooler buddies, lunch partners, gossip sharers, and hopefully ultimately some lasting and meaningful friendships too. When you work remotely, this is one of the many areas which is now completely under YOUR control! No more default relationships chosen by someone else, or putting up with people you don't like just because you share a space. But no more done-for-you proximity either. Now, YOU GET TO CHOOSE who you hang out with and give your time to, 𝗕𝘂𝘁 - 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗛𝗔𝗩𝗘 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲. Data from November 2024 suggests that 59% of Irish workers are finding it hard to “switch off from work”.* We understand the importance of getting remote workers away from their desk. That's why we supported Grow Remote volunteers to host a series of social events this month for remote employees all over the country - from after work drinks to yoga, brunch, hiking, a tour of an art gallery and coffee meetups. Nepal currently ranks 89 out of 108 countries when it comes the 2023 ranking of the best countries in the world for remote work. But the only problem I see here is: the lack of consistent internet connection quality across the country. If this was sorted, then it could easily be one of the top destination for remote work. No wonder the top 10 remote working destination are all in Europe. Denmark tops the list followed by Netherlands and Germany. USA ranks 16 while India ranks 64. What do you think can be done to improve Nepal's ranking and position itself as one of the top destination for remote work in the world?

Remote work is an effective organisational model, but not 100% remote all of the time, that is a misinterpretation I have yet to meet a successful remote team that does not do in-person time Mixing up the remote environment with quality in-person time and connection My professional ratio is about 80% remote, 20% in person via offsites, networking, cafe, coworking, events, 1:1s and meetups. For teams that I advise, I recommend this ratio, with the IRL being there, weaved in, via: ✅ local coworking time (can be individual) ✅ local or country team/group meetups ✅ leadership away days or meetups (can be weaved into offsite planning) ✅ all-team offsite's, ensuring to involve all team members via a remote program version ✅ virtual team offsites, when no travel or IRL time is possible What is most important is that the IRL time is there and encouraged, with the foundation being at 1-2 all team offsites per year You need a model that has in person time prioritised Please borrow the one I share below as your starting template, I would appreciate tagged for the credit! Thank me later 😜 💚 Yours Remotely since 2017 ™️ RoRemote Footnotes: Image drawn with Excalidraw and inspired by my current fractional work and rhythm with Nosana. Pic id: 90% remote to 10% in person time image - Remote First model of operations with regular IRL and in-person time.

So you would like to attract remote workers. Where to start? First, let's remember - not every place needs to become a hub to be appealing. While several projects promote hubs (and these can be great), it's not the only way. Many remote workers, like myself, also love going somewhere for other reasons. Like culture, getting to know another world, genuine connections with locals with completely different lives, etc. Here's how to stand out to remote workers looking for a blend of work and authentic experiences: ⭐ Emphasize authentic living: Show the genuine lifestyle your area offers. What is daily life like? Market the local charm one can get into ⭐ Promote unique productivity: Instead of happening co-working spaces, highlight spots where one can work peacefully while enjoying the area. Like serene outdoor spaces, charming cafés, pop-up events with local businesses, suitable accommodations, or even a library ⭐ Local interactions over classical networking events: Encourage community connection. Offer platforms and events where locals and remote workers can connect over shared interests ⭐ Sustainability and slow living: Tap into the growing trend of slow living. Show how your area supports a sustainable, less rushed lifestyle good for inspiration. Community projects where one can contribute? Great! ⭐ Highlight unique experiences you love: Do you have a weekly farmers market or beautiful hiking trails? Small charming events with local talents? These can be big draws for people looking to get into the culture ⭐ Be clear on what to expect: Some people only want to go where big established communities are, while others have different drives. Rather than trying to appeal to all or copy existing projects, attract those who appreciate what you offer 😎 ➡ What local charms would convince you to make a new place your remote work base? ➡ Do you ever base yourself in non-hubs? Why/why not? 📷 Samaipata. The Santa Cruz area is not a remote work hub (yet). But it has a charming community, local entrepreneurs, interesting people, unique experiences, and beautiful places. Love it here and will be back for sure 😍 #remoteworkers #digitalnomads #workandtravel
