Sales and Marketing Need a Bridge (Quickly I Might Add) It's ironic: sales and marketing are codependent, yet they often clash like rival sports teams. Finger-pointing and blame games seem more common than collaboration. A recent study found (https://buff.ly/2KJJ1ic) that only 23.1% of sales professionals felt that sales and marketing were strongly aligned. In order to achieve their shared goal—revenue growth—this divide must be bridged. At OTM, we guide new clients through diagnostic tools and frameworks to identify underlying issues. We've observed a strong correlation between sales team maturity and marketing's reactivity. Picture this: the CEO questions the sales leader about missed quotas. The response? "We're not getting enough quality leads." While this might be partly true, the bigger issue is that the CEO is asking the sales leader, not the marketing leader. This sets off a chain reaction: the CEO demands quick results, and marketing scrambles to implement new tactics, often focusing on short-term gains at the expense of long-term strategy. This knee-jerk reaction might yield a few extra leads, but it's not sustainable. It merely masks the root problem: misalignment between Sales and Marketing. Building a Bridge from the Bottom Up Here's where we typically start: 1. Sales Process & Standardization: The sales team needs clear processes and standardized procedures. This not only improves efficiency but also provides crucial data, trends, and feedback. 2. Regular MQL/SQL Reviews: Sales-qualified leads (SQLs) should be reviewed with marketing on a regular cadence (usually monthly). Analyzing lead sources, pain points, and persona alignment ensures valuable feedback loops back into the marketing strategy. 3. Shared Metrics: Both sales and marketing should present shared metrics to leadership, not just their individual departmental numbers. Key metrics like MQLs (Marketing Qualified Leads), SQLs, CAC (Customer Acquisition Cost), Customer LTV (Lifetime Value), and revenue growth offer a holistic view of performance and alignment with organizational goals. By implementing these steps, you can foster a collaborative environment where sales and marketing work together as a unified force, driving sustainable revenue growth for your business.
