Architects - you know this is true. Your website should have a different focus👇 ATTRACTING CLIENTS AND CREATING OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUR BUSINESS. That's a fundamentally different approach from impressing other architects. Shift your focus from impressing architects to creating opportunities if you want your website to actually bring in business. Not sure how to do that? I've heard many architects say they've never landed a project from their website. This happens simply because the websites they go for range from being glorified archives to sometimes just a business card. The first thing that Architects usually do is check their competitors website, and then try to model theirs based on that. From welcome pages, to slow load times, image carousels on the home page, to a dump of all projects - the problems are numerous. If a website isn't made with a client in mind, it can't lead to sales. It's as simple as that.

After having reviewed countless of architecture websites, I can't tell you enough how right you are. The majority of architecture websites doesn't have a strategy, is not adhering to marketing standards and is rather a "fancy" business card or a portfolio gallery, than an effective website. A lot of focus is on the design and not on the effectiveness, so I'm totally with you. Just "being online" will not attract potential clients. And you definitely don't need a website to impress other architects! I think the main problem is that very few firms have a marketing team, let alone a marketing background. They start seeing it as a necessary measurement nowadays, but lack the knowledge to implement it properly. Definitely interested in the guide, as all architects here should be! website

I don’t disagree, but playing Devil’s advocate: Marketing professionals bring in clients, not websites. There may be some smaller scale firms that rely on their website to do this work for them, but generally the services architect’s offer is not quite something you just google up like a restaurant menu. An architect’s website mostly serves as a reference of qualifications-for potential clients, consultants, construction managers, etc. I’d be interested to hear your proposed solutions, so: Website!!

😅 Architects have a tendency to cater to creatives.. but also, are clients even going through the website to give commisions ? Can the website alone get new clients? In our experience, we have rarely landed a project because of the website alone. It is good for credibility establishment but most projects are sourced through government competitions/tendering or privately through word of mouth / and more importantly what clients read about us - (indirectly) what others have said about us (pr). Perhaps it also depends on the stage of the firm’s life cycle.. What are your thoughts on putting out a comprehensive / exhaustive list of projects.. on a website.. is it essential?

I think generally Architects always hangout with other architects and try to impress each other, which makes nosense. Another architect won't become your client.

I spoke to a potential client last week and that was their feedback too! They looked at the architects listed with the Australian Passivhaus Association and found that many had missing, under construction, or unhelpful websites. They booked a call with us because they understood our values, our process, and it was simple to reach out to us.

I give this a qualified "true." If a firm has a marketing team that runs the site, they probably are targeting the right audience.

imagine a client who says “🤔 hmm maybe i should choose Pelli Clarke Associates instead of Foster and Partners” by looking at their websites. 😂 Most probably no client ever checks their architects website or decide to work with one by looking at their website. It is like an outdated full page sized instagram.
