It’s great to see the progress being made at Old Paradise Street! The project is transforming the former Costa Coffee roastery into a sustainable workplace building that exemplifies low carbon and sustainable design. Key elements include: • Demolition of existing structures and construction of a new G+5 storey CAT A office building with a basement. • Proximity to live railway station and B5 access mitigated with Sprinklers and 2 fire fighting shafts. • Use of a timber hybrid superstructure with CLT floors and roof, glulam beams and columns, and a concrete and steel core justified with bespoke large scale fire test attended by Sweco and London Fire Brigade. • Predicted to exceed RIBA’s 2030 Climate Challenge and LETI’s 2030 targets. Only 12 weeks ago I was on site watching Richard White’s Scotframe #Valutherm timber frame being installed. Thomas Edwards has the finishing of our kits down to a fine art nowadays. Despite the weather it brightened up my week to round it off in Oxfordshire admiring progress on site. What I particularly like about E&W Estates projects is the way they always manage to blend the traditional and contemporary so effortlessly. Amid the wildfires still burning out of control in Los Angeles, a Massachusetts architect is busy at work with his team in showcasing the “totally fireproof” modular house he’s been designing for the past three and a half years. The Sustainable Alternative Modular House, or the SAM House, is a climate responsive house made up of 12,000-psi, very dense concrete designed to sustain winds up to 200 mph. The dense, waterproof, and non-flammable materials of the roof and wall panels do not have flame spread, making this “disaster replacement house” fireproof, not just fire resistant. Architect Gary Hendren, SAM House’s designer, recognized the fact that modular construction “is a very efficient way to make a fire-resistant house”, and that this “economic” solution will allow people “to live where they want to live”. SAM House’s innovative design shows that by harnessing advanced materials and construction techniques, modular homes can withstand destructive forces such as hurricanes and wildfires, offering an economic solution that provides peace of mind to those living in high-risk areas. The existence of this disaster replacement house just shows that if we think beyond what is conventional and embrace innovative solutions, we may be able to protect what matters most: our safety, our communities, and our future. Unless they're amphibious, Cars are meant to be driven on land, not water. Judging that the truck in the video is not amphibious, I don't know why the passengers trusted it to convey them across the water. Probably an adventure, though 😂 We love trying new things as humans but must learn where to draw the line. For example, in building construction, if you attempt to convert a small building like a bungalow into a duplex, you might end up with an unsafe house for people to live in. Why? The foundation was initially fashioned for a bungalow, not a duplex. Also, the reinforcements might not be strong enough to bear the weight of the new structure. Please note that I'm not ruling out this possibility, as I've previously supervised many reconstructions. However, you must work closely with a professional building consultant if considering a reconstruction.
