REMEMBER TO LIKE AND SHARE!: THE DREADED 3M STICKY CUSHION FLANGE! A big problem facing both 1" and 2" inch open reel videotape archives is the dreaded 3M / Scotch "cushion flange" series reels. Originally designed to prevent edge damage and static buildup 3m/Scotch came up with the idea to place a protective foam cushion inside the reel. Unfortunately over time that foam turns into a liquid state seeping a "honey like" glue throughout the case and videotape Quite often there can be no outward indication of how badly the foam may have disintegrated until the metal flange is removed. Thankfully all is not lost just yet! With time and patience the glue can be dissolved and removed and the contents of the tape successfully recovered. With all the issues facing videotape archives and my continual education to bring awareness. I do find it frustrating that many content holders are still leaving recovery and digitisation too late!
