Tips for Hiring in the Sustainability Sector. We are hearing more and more about "Green jobs". Even more so now that we have a new PM that is enthusiastic about this. If you are hiring for staff in the sustainability sector, you will have seen our tips and reports. Here are a few things for you to consider that are less about the technical skills that may well give your next hire a competitive edge: 1. Look for Real-World Experience: Its an obvious one but experience helps people hit the ground running. Keep your eyes peeled for candidates who have hands-on experience with sustainability projects or relevant certifications. Their background can help them tackle industry-specific challenges more effectively. 2. Value Soft Skills: If you cant find the previous experience (or you can train the technical skills), then place emphasis on strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills. These are essential for working with different departments and pushing forward sustainability initiatives. 3. Find Passionate People: A lot can be trained but inner drive counts for a lot. Hire people who are genuinely passionate about sustainability and share your company's environmental values. I was recently speaking with a sustainability leader who is looking for an engineer. They said to me: “The project has now started. This is an urgent position.” As a recruiter specialising on the sustainable built environment, I understand that deadlines are key. These are my recommendations to companies who are approaching deadlines and need a fix. 1️⃣ Review The Strategy: Take a step back and reevaluate the hiring strategy. Are all stakeholders aligned? Where are the problems? 2️⃣ Consider Interim Solutions: When deadlines are approaching, interim solutions can be a perfect short term fix. 3️⃣ Use External Networks: Other connections in the sustainable built environment can help with finding the right talent. This then saves valuable time and resources. 4️⃣ Flexibility is Key: In today's working environment, companies need to flexible with the type of candidate and working arrangement. 5️⃣ Streamline the Process: Simplify the hiring process to speed up decision making. Minimise unnecessary steps and ensure clear communication channels between stakeholders to avoid delays. Remember, in the competitive sustainable built environment industry, every moment counts, small changes make a big difference!
