Rolls-Royce SMR has enlisted GSE Solutions to develop a power station simulator, as it continues to mature the design of its SMR technology and remains on track to complete Step 2 of the Generic Design Assessment this summer.   GSE Solutions is a world leader in advanced engineering and workforce solutions across the clean-energy and power industries. This simulator will play a key role in Rolls-Royce SMR’s programme to develop, verify and validate the performance and control systems of its unique ‘factory-built’ nuclear power plant. It forms part of a much wider programme of development activities that are focussed on ensuring the ‘delivery-certain’ nature of the plant.   David Dodd, Rolls-Royce SMR Engineering Director, said: “Commissioning a simulation and test platform is another stride towards deploying the first Rolls-Royce SMR power plant. Hyundai E&C picked to build new reactor at Bulgaria’s Kozloduy NPP #bne #bneEditorsPicks #bneGreen #Bulgaria #nuclear #renewables #energy Bulgaria has shortlisted South Korea's Hyundai Engineering and Construction Hyundai (E&C) as the sole bidder eligible to continue in the procedure for expressions of interest to build a new reactor using Westinghouse Electric's AP1000 technology at the Kozloduy nuclear power plant, special project company Kozloduy NPP-New Build said in a statement. Currently, Kozloduy NPP has only two Soviet-era working units – five and six. The energy ministry said in October last year that it will kick off the procedure to pick a contractor for the design, construction and commissioning of unit seven and will also start the procedure to build unit eight, both using the AP1000 technology.

The shutdown nuclear reactor in Michigan, Palisades, is planning to restart in August 2025 The shuttered Palisades Nuclear Power Plant is inching ever so slowly to being the first reactor to be restarted.   In September, Wolverine Power agreed to buy up to 2/3rds of the power from the plant if it restarted.  In June, Michigan state legislators set aside $150 million to fund restarting the reactor.  Holtec, the junker or decommissioning company, is meeting with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to lay out a path for restarting the reactor. The reactor's license expires in 2031. The only holdup, aside from regulatory approval, appears to be the loan that Holtec is seeking from the Department of Energy to help finance restarting the reactor.  This all kind of begs the question as to if this reactor is restarted, how long will it stay in operation? It was sold by Entergy to Holtec for decommissioning because struggled to compete in the electrical markets against natural gas, wind, and solar generation. The MISO region, like much of the U.S., had capacity issues over the abnormally hot summer and a reduction in dispatchable generation due to more and more generation being wind and solar. More dispatchable generation will be welcomed but for how long if the unit is unprofitable? #utilities #electricalengineering #nuclearpower #nuclear #renewables #energystorage #smartgrid

EDF withdraws from the competition to build #SmallModularReactors in #UK... It comes at a time when the plans for #Nuward are being revisited and reduce the competition to five participants: Westinghouse Electric Company and its #AP300, GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy and its #BWRX300, Rolls-Royce SMR, #Holtec and NuScale Power... Will this decission become a handicap for the long term #Nuward deployment???

DOE estimates the U.S. will need approximately 700-900 GW of additional clean, firm capacity to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, that leaves out solar and wind. Geothermal and hydro are difficult to escale, but nuclear power is a proven option that could be deployed to meet this need, including the growing demand from artificial intelligence and other data centers and the reshoring of manufacturing, while creating high-paying jobs with concentrated economic benefits for communities most impacted by the energy transition. Per the DOE’s Pathways to Advanced Nuclear Commercial Liftoff report (https://lnkd.in/gWa3kzew), establishing a committed orderbook of reactors in the near-term is critical to accelerating technology learning and reducing deployment costs. DOE is starting with almost a billion to start the deployment of two small modular reactors.
