We have published a new tutorial on condition-based maintenance through vibration analysis titled "Signal Processing for the Condition-Based Maintenance of Rotating Machines via Vibration Analysis: A Tutorial." We have also sent a post regarding its publication in the Sensor journal. This time, in response to several interested readers, we want to emphasize that all the codes, data, and explanatory videos related to this tutorial are available through this GitHub link: https://lnkd.in/dsUqP4hz

I was studying the symmetrical components of a power system and will summarize my understanding in this post. In an ideal case, all three phases of a balanced power system are 120 degrees apart from each other, and the Vector sum of all three phases is equal to zero. However, in an unbalanced system, there are symmetrical components that are 120 degrees apart and can be added arithmetically to obtain the resultant. The three symmetrical components are: 1) Positive Sequence 2) Negative Sequence 3) Zero Sequence Positive Sequence: If the symmetrical components are in phase and have the same phase rotation as that of the power system, this is called positive sequence. For example, if the power system is ABC, then the positive sequence will also be ABC. Positive sequence components are the primary components of balanced loads and normal operating conditions (a healthy system will have a positive sequence). Negative Sequence: If the phase rotation of the component is opposite to the power system, then it will be a negative sequence. For example, if the power system is ABC, then the negative sequence will be ACB. Negative sequence components are produced by unbalanced loads or faults, such as single-line-to-ground faults or line-to-line faults. Phase faults will have a majority of negative sequence components. Zero Sequence: The symmetrical components that are in phase with each other are called zero sequence. Zero sequence components are not 120 degrees apart from each other. They are commonly associated with ground faults.
