The last couple of years have seen countries move away from interventionist spectrum policies such as single wholesale networks (SWNs) to other, more collaborative policies encouraging investment in underserved areas, delivering mobile capacity and encouraging adoption. In a new report on single wholesale networks, the GSMA looks at the demise of this spectrum licensing approach and other more effective solutions to addressing coverage and usage gaps. The latter includes case studies from Brazil and the U.K. All #governments must carefully consider their approach to increase the quality and reach of next-generation mobile broadband. The best way forward is for governments, regulators, and mobile operators to collaborate on long-term solutions. Best practice learnings include: 🟥 Affordable access to low-band spectrum promotes mobile coverage and increases capacity. 🟥 Setting out a robust spectrum roadmap allows long-term planning and minimises OpEx. 🟥 Technology neutrality and spectrum refarming deliver efficiency. 🟥 Voluntary infrastructure sharing will support wider coverage. 🟥 Voluntary spectrum leasing or trading helps maximise efficiency. Where over the past 25+ years, Wi-Fi technology has proven its worth, connecting every corner of the earth and even beyond. Today, I'd like to take the opportunity to highlight the socio-economic impact of those four letters in the yin-yang logo we all recognize. Wi-Fi has revolutionized access to education and work, and it's become indispensable in critical areas like healthcare and emergency services. This technology has fostered a robust industry, not only developers and vendors but also those who install and maintain the equipment daily. It's so integral to our lives that it even features in governmental policymaking. Our daily reliance on Wi-Fi becomes especially apparent when it's not available! 😉 Considering its socio-economic attributes, let’s also focus on combining them with health.
