That big pink lady cyclist in the photo is me on my 2 wheeled transport plan. I've been using my bike for my primary form of transport for over 10 years now. It's good for the environment and good for my health. It's cheap to run, my petrol spend is way down when I only use the car once or twice a month or for special occasions. Like visiting my Nana in Te Aroha. Because getting a bus or train there is not a realistic option either. It's useful to consider, harmful rhetoric around what type of transport people chose to use on any given day is probably an advertising campaign cooked up by people selling cars and petrol. Because using a bike doesn't actually impact anyone except the people not selling as much petrol, or cars. 3 million less cars on the road reduces traffic. 3 million less emissions helps climate action. 3 million less cars parked on the street outside your house. It kind of makes sense that if you're someone who loves to drive, try to get as many people as you can to start riding a bike.

Two years ago, I would have ridden with my husband. But he’s still recovering from a breaking his leg in September 2022 and is wary about riding due to balance issues. So, I am riding with my niece. As we do some training rides, I realize that our cycling speed, strength, and agility are different and will affect how we ride together. A new study done by the European Cyclists Federation has found unsurprising but significant results with hard data proving that #bike #lanes get citizens #cycling more as well as improve overall perceptions of public spaces. These results may not be shocking to those in the cycling community, but the hard data now gives campaigners and urban planners a heavier footing to argue for more #cycling #infrastructure in cities around the world. Recently, I had the opportunity to see the cycling infrastructure along the seafront in Southend-on-Sea. Among the products being used are the sleek and functional Mini-Ensign Bollards from Glasdon. The Mini-Ensign is a slimline bollard designed to carry signage for cycle routes, directional arrows, and other wayfinding information. As I watched cyclists peddle by, I could see how effectively these bollards delineate the dedicated cycle lanes. Their compact size and clear signing make them perfect for carriageway cycling initiatives aimed at improving safety and promoting active transportation. It's exciting to see Councils investing in this type of infrastructure to encourage cycling as a convenient, healthy, and environmentally friendly way to get around. Paris ranks as the top performing city for bike sharing in Cycling Industries Europe’s ‘Shared Ambition’ 2024 report released today. The report benchmarks the performance of bike sharing in 148 cities across the EU in 2023. For its headline performance indicator- the number of bike share trips relative to population - Paris ranks first with 36.9 daily trips per 1,000 inhabitants, followed by Antwerp and Ljubljana. “This new edition of our Shared Ambition report strengthens the case for bike sharing in European cities and provides all the content a city will need to make the necessary investments for a thriving bike share system,” Cycling Industries Europe CEO and key author of the report Kevin Mayne told Zag Daily. “The mobility department in every city can see what is achievable, set their own targets and find peer cities who are leading by example right across the continent.
