Over the past summer, I had the pleasure of returning to Procter & Gamble in their Grooming BU in Boston, Massachusetts. It was another great internship experience that allowed me to further expand my skills and knowledge in a dynamic and innovative environment. During my 12-week internship, I was assigned four challenging technical projects. Firstly, I worked on improving lubrication strip coil wrap quality by developing a vision system that provided valuable feedback for process control. Secondly, I was tasked with automating a linear lab stage to simulate assembly equipment movement in real time, enhancing our lab's capabilities. Additionally, I collaborated with the manufacturing team on a project to upgrade a light and lens for our blade assembly machines, aiming to improve inspection quality and address obsolescence. Lastly, I conducted proof-of-principle testing for timestamping between our vision and control networking devices, while also exploring the features of our vision system platform. Throughout the internship, the skill I utilized the most was problem-solving and troubleshooting. I encountered numerous challenges and setbacks during various projects. However, I learned to adapt and find new solutions, applying the knowledge gained to prevent future setbacks. This skill was crucial in maintaining progress and achieving project goals. The technical skill that I utilized the most during my internship was becoming proficient in our vision system platform's software and hardware. This software was instrumental in multiple projects, requiring daily interactions for different functions and devices. By spreading and reapplying my learnings, I was able to contribute effectively across all projects. Moreover, I recognized the significance of the vision system in the future of our business and the Instrumentation department. The most valuable lesson I learned from this internship experience was taking ownership of my work and capabilities. I realized the extent of my accomplishments and how I successfully adapted to a steep learning curve within a relatively short timeframe. I am truly grateful for the support of my technical network, mentors, and leadership, as their investment in my professional and personal growth played a pivotal role in my success. Special thanks to my manager Robin Ryce, intern lead Himali Ranade, M.Eng, MBA, and my leadership Adam Lennartz , Kevin Martin , and Karan Dyson. I am excited about the future and eager to apply the skills and knowledge I gained during this experience for my senior year at the University of Dayton School of Engineering. #udaytoncoopintern

#InternshipStories Yunfan Zhang, Class of 2026, interned at Johnson & Johnson (J&J). Below, she shared insights from her experience. Q: What prompted your decision to intern at J&J? Yunfan: Johnson & Johnson's diversified expertise in medical devices, pharmaceuticals, consumer goods, and healthcare services is vast. My internship with them presented an invaluable chance to delve into various specialized fields. The exposure to the intricate R&D and manufacturing processes of medical devices, as well as the strategic marketing of consumer products, promised a comprehensive learning experience. Q: How would you compare the campus life with the internship at a cooperation? Yunfan: Campus life is generally structured, with predictable timetables and clear academic guidelines provided by our Professors. In contrast, internships demand a self-driven approach to time management and initiative. Responsibilities must be balanced with ad-hoc corporate events and engagements. During my internship at J&J, I was often invited to participate in union activities, which required me to proactively coordinate my responsibilities to ensure both work and engagement with the wider corporate community could be harmoniously integrated. Q: Do you have any advice or experiences that could benefit students considering an internship? Yunfan: Time management is pivotal. My responsibilities often entailed completing assignments within weekly deadlines. To manage this, I prioritized structuring my schedule to finish drafts ahead of time, allowing a grace period for superiors to review my work before final submission. Regular communication with my supervisors also enriched my work with their timely feedback, an invaluable element that not only honed my own deliverables but also contributed to a more seamless and productive workflow. Chief Revenue Officer at Impinj | Member, Fast Company Impact Council | Driving Customer Success and Profitable Revenue Growth
I had the opportunity to meet with our summer cohort of Impinj interns to learn more about them and share more about my career journey. I was impressed by their accomplishments during their internships and their eagerness to learn more about how to best manage their careers going forward. I shared three key takeaways from my career that I believe apply to anyone at any stage of their career journey. 1. Be open to taking risks. Stepping out of your comfort zone and raising your hand to lead a challenging project or opportunity can significantly accelerate your career growth. 2. Feed your passions and always be learning. I have learned so much from reading books, watching TED Talks, listening to podcasts, and meeting people within our company and beyond. I believe continued self-guided education can open our minds to new, innovative ideas and strengthen our readiness to confidently seek new and expanded career opportunities. 3. Learn early in your career to be a leader who doesn’t rely solely upon positional authority. Instead, lead with effective communication, collaboration, accountability, and inclusivity. Leadership is earned by your values, actions, and behaviors, not simply by your role and title.
