Last week, we attended the World Trade Organization’s Trade Facilitation Committee Meeting, where our project in Guatemala was showcased 🇬🇹 How is Guatemala advancing trade facilitation? – With support from the Alliance, the government has introduced new business processes and automated systems to reduce the time and cost of managing the shipment arrivals and departures, ultimately improving national trade competitiveness.🚢 The Alliance project covered two key phases: 🔄Phase I – Streamlining processes by implementing international best practices and fostering inter-institutional collaboration. 🖥️ Phase II - Going digital by automating previously manual port processes through the national Single Window VUMAR. We greatly appreciate the collaboration with all our partners, including ASONAV, APM Terminals, A.P. As global trade dynamics shift, Southeast Asia's strategic air hubs, notably Hong Kong (HKG) and Singapore (SIN), are poised to capitalize on the offshoring of trade from China. These hubs have long been pivotal in facilitating international commerce, and recent developments underscore their growing significance. In 2024, both Changi Airport in Singapore and Hong Kong International Airport reported record cargo volumes, reflecting their critical roles in global supply chains. The surge in e-commerce has further amplified the demand for efficient air cargo services. Companies like Shein and Temu have significantly increased airfreight capacity, leading to a 40% rise in freight rates from southern China. (WSJ, 2024). Recognizing these trends, regional players are enhancing infrastructure to bolster their positions as key logistics hubs. For instance, China Henan Aviation (CHAGC) has partnered with Malaysia Airports to explore establishing an air cargo hub in Malaysia, aiming to strengthen connectivity within the Belt and Road Initiative framework. (stattimes.com, 2025) Thailand is also vying to become a leading air cargo hub in Southeast Asia, leveraging its strategic location and potential for growth. In 2024, Asia dominates the world's busiest ports, with nine out of the top 10 located in the region, highlighting the growing focus on eastward trade. Intra-Asian trade has surged due to supply chain adjustments and enhanced integration, with around 60% of Asian exports now traded within the region. China, hosting seven of the top 10 ports globally, plays a vital role in manufacturing and trade, becoming the largest exporter since 2009. The modernization of China's port network is crucial for the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), facilitating connectivity and trade across Asia, Europe, and Africa. Singapore's Port, the world's second-largest, handled 39 million TEU in 2023 and serves as a pivotal hub with connections to 600 ports across 120 countries. Rotterdam's Port in the Netherlands, Europe's leading hub, focuses on innovation, exploring autonomous shipping projects to enhance operations and efficiency through remote vessel control using advanced technologies.
