Boeing's recent fiasco is the 2nd wake-up call for all of us in engineering. It's a reminder that chasing profits shouldn't mean cutting corners in quality – especially not to the point where our technical shortcuts start to backfire. But, here's the thing – it depends. It depends on what's at stake. For most of us, unlike Boeing, human lives aren't directly on the line. Yet, there is still customer trust, product quality, innovation, speed of iteration that we all should care about. Sometimes, a short term compromise is the right answer (definitely not in Boeing's case!). But, if quality is compromised long enough, it may become harder to fix or may inflict a damage to business that may be challenging to recover from in the long term. History has countless such examples. Don't let your product become a cautionary tale on a LinkedIn post.

A long time ago I wrote a blog post about how there are many things FSAE students only learn at competition. This week I was at the Formula SAE EV competition learning some of those things. The list is long, but I’ll leave here a few generalized important bullets: • Teams in general wish they had moved earlier to EV. • Teams that compete on both classifications, IC and EV, end up only doing EV. • Tech inspection is hard but is not impossible; as in IC, you just have to finish your car early. • Teams are able to get more sponsors by moving to EV, and that offsets the increase in costs. • SAFETY First (no shortcuts!). • Most teams have a Power Electronics co-advisor. • Increasingly more recruiters at EV competition than in IC competition.

Day 1 at Rolls-Royce for work experience was a success! We toured around both the Turbine Blade Facility and Precision Casting facility, learning about each part of the manufacturing process along the way. At some parts of the process we went more in depth and actually took part in the process of machining the turbine blades. Furthermore we learnt about the intricacies of the manufacturing process and how precise the measurements have to be. Within this we learnt how costly mistakes can be and how a low yield can affect the costs of the business.

Test, Test and more Test 🔧⚙️ Possibly one of the most important parts of prototype development. Firstly to certify the safety of the prototypes and then to improve their fine-tuning as much as possible 🚀 The prototype/Team fusion is fundamental to achieve good results and is undoubtedly one of the most exciting parts of this project 💪💪 #MotoStudentForTheFuture
