This came up in my feed on LinkedIn today as I was browsing. Anniversary or memory of torment? Jacques Chalaux was a Senior Regional Manager at Positronic France, with only three or four years to go until retirement. As soon as Amphenol acquired Positronic in 2021, Jacques was let go under the pretext of economic distress due to impact from COVID. Paradoxically, 2021 was a record growth year for Amphenol and Positronic bettered 2020 with over 20% growth YoY. Nevertheless, Jacques was useless to the company, nobody cared. To the new Positronic Amphenol, Jacques was redundant and COVID gave them the best opportunity anybody could wish for to unload of human burden. This is a person who gave nearly 30 years of his life to a career and he was one of the most successful Regional Managers the company had in Europe. At times, the performance in his region alone kept the Positronic French division alive. In hindsight, here comes the question: Is it ethical for a 3 billion dollar company to turn a blind eye to such practice? I would like to invite Adam Norwitt to respond publicly to this question.

For the last couple of weeks a recurring debate is active with industry colleagues as well as in our own office – is logistics business doomed? We work in FVL and are not immune to market trends. Yet, changes here started much earlier than in transport sector in general. 📌 FVL in Europe came into critical time in late 2022. The post-covid new vehicle production demonstrated rising trends and meanwhile the carriers experienced double trouble: shortages of drivers and not sufficient - slower production of vehicles. 📌 Result – a situation where low supply cannot serve the recovering demand. 📌 The numerous macro trends and market developments did not help and further drove the costs up (+27% Jan2019 to Dec 2023, ESG). 📌 2024 does not give too much relief so far. Associations and economists forecast price increases, yet the market does not adopt it easily. So, what do we do? I do not support seeking cost efficiency through the common panacea of selling vehicles and firing drivers. Good people are not easy to find, and we appreciate them. ✅ Our way is to invest in smart management – IT tools that let us see a full 360 view of the business: where is each and every vehicle and what will it do tomorrow? What is the real time load factor or profitability of each vehicle or order? ✅ With the help of the business intel quick decisions are possible and effective. So to answer the first question - no, logistics is not doomed. Things are not easy, but tough times make us think better. #logistics #FVL #toughtimes #investsmart
