Data shows that not all base to final accidents are stall/spins. Rather, a goodly proportion are botched steep turns, similar to when pilots screw up a 360° steep banked turn at altitude. What's insidious is that a botched steep turn, base to final, can be a low angle of attack, ball centered loss of control.
