🌍 Recap of ALLFORPACK EMBALLAGE PARIS 2024: Towards a Sustainable Packaging Industry ♻️ Sustainable innovation took center stage at the recent ALL4Pack exhibition, featuring numerous conferences, workshops, and a dedicated space for circularity. Over 1,000 exhibitors showcased cutting-edge sustainable packaging solutions, focusing on eco-design, packaging reduction, reuse, new material development, and enhanced recyclability. Here are just a few examples: 🧃Tetra Pak highlighted its aseptic carton packaging featuring a paper-based barrier combined with plant-based polymers, replacing the traditional aluminum layer. This reduces the carbon footprint by one-third while maintaining food safety and packaging performance. 🍷 BAG'INNOV presented 100% recyclable, self-standing flexible pouches for liquid packaging without aluminum or PET. 🥫 Meadow redesigned the opening mechanism of cans to make them 100% recyclable, while providing a reusable dispensing system to avoid spilling of food or cosmetic liquids. 🥛 LACTIPS developed a new biodegradable and water-soluble polymer based on casein, applicable for films among others. 🌿 A big thank you to Packaging Europe for the terrific experience at the Sustainable Packaging Summit! 🌍 We had a fantastic time engaging in insightful discussions alongside our colleagues Lisa Clark (Archroma), Thais Blumer (Amazon), and Tiina Pursula (Stora Enso) in the session “The Paper Opportunities,” expertly moderated by Patrick Poitevin (advisory4pack). 🎙️ Here are some key takeaways from our session: 🔍 **Barrier Functionality** remains the biggest hurdle for wider adoption of paper-based packaging, although **transition costs** also play a significant role. There is a high level of trust in collection and recycling system for fibre based packaging in Europe ♻️ To meet ambitious recycling targets of 90%, **optimizing collection systems** will be essential. The separation and harmonized collection of fibre packaging are key requirements to meet most ambitious targets. Yesterday, we also presented how cartonboard is paving the way for a circular economy. 🎗️We are delighted to congratulate Zotefoams on the well-deserved Gold Award for Sustainability they received from the German Packaging Association at FACHPACK last week. 👏👏👏 The award recognises ReZorce®, the company’s disruptive mono-material barrier packaging range hitting supermarket shelves soon as an alternative to liquid packaging board cartons. Liquid paperboard is notoriously difficult to recycle and will attract higher costs for brand owners as extended producer responsibility (EPR) schemes roll out in Europe and elsewhere. Obviously, we advocate for reusable packaging, but where it is not an option (yet) brand-owners must turn to alternative materials which can fit into today's recycling infrastructure. ReZorce is a fabulous example of the ground-breaking material innovation we need to enable a circular economy for plastics, and we're incredibly proud to support them to bring this to market.
