We believe providing better food today, will build a better world tomorrow 🌎 Today, we’re announcing a trial of our new paper-based MasterFoods Recyclable Squeeze-On Tomato Sauce packs in Australia. Over the last five years of research and development, we’ve invested $3m (AUD) to find a recyclable solution that still allows tomato sauce lovers to be able to hold a pie in one hand, and their sauce in the other. The new packs are 58% less plastic than the original, and can be processed via kerbside recycling. Fully recyclable food packaging for sushi specialist EAT HAPPY Deutschland 🍣 🎉♻️ We partnered with EAT HAPPY, to develop a fully recyclable sustainable solution for the firm’s disposable plastic sushi trays. By October, plastic sushi trays will be replaced with new corrugated packaging at all EAT HAPPY locations across Germany. The customer's decision to adopt the new packaging solution is made on the one hand to reduce plastic waste by using natural and fully recyclable resources and to respond to the increasing demand from retailers and consumers for more sustainable packaging. On the other hand, the new packaging solution is fully in line with current legislation to avoid single-use plastic. Functionality tradeoffs come with the territory for brand owners seeking to move to more sustainable #packaging materials. This is especially true for large food manufacturers, like Kraft Heinz, who have to consider Scope 3 emissions, but also, food waste and the methane it produces This according to Brendan Adams (second from right below), who spoke today at GreenBlue Org and Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC)'s Advance conference, on a panel alongside Mondelēz International and Tetra Pak. "As we evaluate our packages and packaging material, and as Kraft Heinz reduces our virgin plastic, whether it's increasing recycling content, whether it's changing to a different material, we really need to ask. 'Will this change or new material innovation ultimately decrease food waste?' Because food waste is connected to methane, and that's something we need to be cognizant of. According to the USDA and EPA study, methane is 28 times more potent than CO2. So whatever we do to packaging has to consider, how we can decarbonize and how we can reduce food waste?," Adams said.

As part of National Recycling Week, we’re proud to highlight our latest sustainable packaging initiative—the transition to recycle-ready film for the packaging of our 20kg cheese blocks at our Stanhope site in northern Victoria. We make around 18,000 metric tonnes of 20kg cheese blocks at Stanhope each year, which requires 52 metric tonnes of plastic wrap annually—and now, all that plastic is recycle-ready. This move is a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to sustainability, while ensuring our packaging materials meet the same high standards for food safety and quality. Currently, 85% of our packaging sold in Australia is recyclable, and this project is one of 30 initiatives driving us toward our 2025 goal: to make all our packaging recyclable, reusable, or compostable. While we’re proud of our progress, we know we have more work to do.
