With our PROTEC² CLIQ access management solution, we know that one solution does not fit all, and not all doors are needed to secure with the same security level. Luckily, the electronic CLIQ key is also able to open both ABLOY mechanical and CLIQ electronic locks, so there is no need to change your entire system to electronic. Some of the locks can therefore be implemented cost-effectively with mechanical locking, and only the necessary doors as electromechanical CLIQ locks. PROTEC² CLIQ also reduces lifecycle costs with preprogrammed and wireless components that bring down installation costs. At the same time, the system also makes it easy to add new locations and locks whenever needed. A common problem I see all the time in legacy and even new control systems... Tying an interlock to the same point as an alarm. Interlocks and alarms both play crucial roles in maintaining the safety and efficiency of a system. However, they serve different purposes and should be treated as such. **Alarms** are designed to alert operators or systems to potential issues or deviations from the norm. They are essentially an early warning system, allowing for proactive measures to be taken before a situation escalates. On the other hand, **Interlocks** are safety devices designed to prevent a machine from operating under potentially hazardous conditions. They act as a last line of defense, shutting down operations when certain parameters are breached. Tying an interlock to the same point as an alarm can lead to several problems: 1. **Reduced Response Time**: If an alarm and interlock are tied to the same point, the operator may not have enough time to respond to the alarm before the interlock initiates a shutdown. 2. **Increased Risk of Failure**: If the point of connection fails, both the alarm and the interlock could potentially fail, leaving the system vulnerable. 3. **Confusion and Misinterpretation**: Simultaneous triggering of an alarm and interlock can lead to confusion for operators, making it harder to diagnose and address the issue. While it might seem efficient to tie an interlock and an alarm to the same point, it's important to remember that they serve different functions and require separate points of connection for optimal operation and safety. Have you seen this same issue in the wild? Is there a time when you must tie them together for a specific reason? Comment below:
