I am pleased to share my next article, "The Political and Economic Impacts of Formula 1 Races in Azerbaijan: Myths and Realities", which offers a unique perspective and in-depth analysis on this topic.Since 2016, Azerbaijan has been hosting the Formula 1 Grand Prix. Due to COVID-19, the race was not held in 2020 and was conducted without spectators in 2021. The initial contract for the event was supposed to end in 2020, but it was extended for another three years. In 2023, Azerbaijan secured the continuation of its hosting rights until at least 2026 1. Apart from Formula 1, the country has hosted several other prestigious international events, including the Eurovision Song Contest in 2012, the first European Olympic Games in 2015, the 4th Islamic Solidarity Games in 2017, and the European Youth Olympic Festival in 2019. In 2024, Azerbaijan will host COP29, the most significant event in its history since independence, further adding to its diverse event portfolio. Despite some questions surrounding Baku's role as a host for Formula 1 compared to other international sports events, the Azerbaijani government has regularly organized the race for the past seven years and has yet to address these questions. In this paper, we examine the myths and realities regarding the political and economic impacts of Formula 1 races. For those interested, I invite you to read the full article through this link, acknowledging and respecting your valuable time and interest in this crucial topic. As of now, many Olympic venues built since 1896 are still in use, while others have been repurposed or demolished. Some iconic venues, such as the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens (hosted the 1896 Olympics), are still used for events and ceremonies. However, the fate of each venue varies depending on factors such as maintenance, funding, and public interest. Some venues are repurposed for different sports or events, while others are left in a state of disrepair. Overall, the legacy of Olympic venues can vary widely by location.
Looking back at the Olympic venues since 1896 – are they still in use?

Before thinking about Paris 2024's opening ceremonies being one week from today, let's flash back to Paris 1924, in many ways the first modern Olympic Games. The Paris Games of 1924 fit historically in the window of five enormously significant Olympic Games sandwiched between the first and second World Wars- Antwerp 1920, Paris 1924, Amsterdam 1928, Los Angeles 1932 and Berlin 1936. That the Olympics simply returned in Antwerp in 1920, after WWI caused the cancelation of the 1916 Games is probably significant enough. No Olympic truce for us 20th Century types. Amsterdam saw women on the track for the first time, Los Angeles marked a return to America and all that LA symbolizes in Olympic history, and Berlin is the culmination of the Olympics and political and social spectacle as Jesse Owens defied Hitler's ideals on supremacy as sport was a surrogate for statecraft. It is in these "sandwiched Games," the Olympics first began addressing the issues that defined the next one hundred years, gender, race, inclusion, opportunity and global politics of society not just sport. There is probably no better lens to see the modern Olympics coming of age than that of Paris 1924. Professional coaches, if not athletes. Yes, even tennis players like Rene Lacoste were amateurs, yes that Lacoste. It was the Olympics of Harold Abrahams and Eric Liddell made famous in "Chariots of Fire," of Johnny Weissmuller and Duke Kahanamoku who remain famous even today anywhere there is water, and of Jackson Scholz and the incomparable Paavo Nurmi. 1924 was also the year that Coca-Cola began the longest continuously running sports sponsorship in history with the Olympics that will celebrate its centennial in Paris this year. These Games would mark Baron Pierre de Coubertin’s, the father of the revived Olympics, last as President of the IOC. The folks at The Atlantic have compiled an amazing photographic history of the 1924 Paris Games to help us get ready for the 2024 Paris Games. #Olympics, #HistoryofSports #GlobalSports #SportsSponsorship

The R&A has introduced a 'fair competition policy' to determine the eligibility of golfers who describe themselves as transgender to compete in its professional and elite amateur championships. "The policy has been developed following extensive consultation over the last year with medical and scientific experts who have reviewed the best available research on transgender participation in high performance sport. The evidence shows that golf is a gender-affected sport in which male puberty confers a performance advantage," said a spokesman. "From the start of 2025, a golfer entering female professional and elite amateur championships organised by The R&A must have been female at birth or transitioned to female before the onset of male puberty to be eligible to compete. "Players assigned male at birth and who have experienced male puberty are ineligible to compete in these events, but can enter male professional and elite amateur championships organised by The R&A. "These requirements will not apply at a recreational level where the sport supports inclusivity through the World Handicap System, which enables golfers worldwide to play and compete together on a fair and equitable basis regardless of age, ability, background or gender." Martin Slumbers, CEO of The R&A, said, “We have carefully reviewed the best available medical and scientific advice relating to participation in elite and scratch level golf competitions by transgender athletes and decided that updating our entry conditions to preserve fairness in our female professional and elite amateur championships is the right thing to do. “While we believe that golf should be open to all and are committed to developing the sport, we recognise that we have a duty to ensure that in our elite competitions players can compete fairly and equally.” The R&A has also developed guidance which has been provided to its affiliated national federations as they establish appropriate policies for their own competitions and those of their member golf clubs in their own individual countries, where gender recognition may be subject to different approaches.

4moInsightful! I will also add that as Formula 1 continues to expand globally, it's important to also consider the darker side of large-scale international events. Research has shown that such events can lead to increased incidents of human trafficking, particularly sex trafficking, as traffickers exploit the influx of tourists and the demand for illicit services. While F1 brings excitement and economic benefits to host cities, it's critical that we also strengthen efforts to combat trafficking and support vulnerable and marginalized individuals.
