A recent LinkedIn poll by Richard Chambers highlighted that the #1 strategic risk to Internal Audit is attracting and retaining talent. In recent discussions with CAEs, this point emerges when we discuss key focus areas for 2024. Specifically, many CAEs are grappling with the question, "What can I do to better engage my team members?” The consensus answer I've received is to provide team members with more autonomy at work. Due to the nature of our work, which involves independent testing and reviews, reaching consensus on audit scope, and CAE sign-off on observations and the audit report, this task can be challenging. Here are some suggestions that were shared to give auditors more autonomy at work: Internal Audit Staff Can they own a portion of the audit program, they determine the timeline needed to get the work done, and determine what work needs to be reviewed, and what work does not? Internal Audit Seniors Can they own the management of the entire audit project and ensure all of the work is getting done (if not already)? Internal Audit Leadership Can they run the risk assessment process for the part of the business they manage? Can they determine what audit projects should be completed, and when? Can they make their own hiring decisions? All Internal Auditors - Can they meet and present to levels of management they normally would not have? - Can they self assess and determine what additional training is needed to complete their audit projects? - Can they suggest and carry-out projects to improve the process of Internal Audit? - Can they determine what hours they work during the work week? You can be involved in ACTUAL advisory 😲😲😲...Which I know is big staple for a lot of my Audit Network. It's the norm at this firm. 20/30% of your job you're expected to run your relationships and be the go to advisor. When I say actual Advisory, I mean being involved in Restructuring, Accounting and anything else your client needs. Throw in that you won't work any weekends. PLUS you will be out by 6pm latest (no matter how hectic your busy season is) and this one is a winner. Only looking at Manager levels at the minute. During the past three weeks, I’ve met three different CAEs of public companies with annual revenues between $5 billion and $10 billion who were all hired in their new roles within the past six months. When discussing why they were ultimately hired by their company and the executive team's expectations of their new internal audit leader, three main themes emerged: 1. They are being asked, and held accountable, to modernize the Internal Audit department and increase its capabilities. 2. They were hired because the CFO/CEO wants Internal Audit to be a better partner to the business. 3. There is an expectation for Internal Audit to be a catalyst in better coordinating and consolidating, or connecting, the work done by all risk, control, and assurance functions. Whether you are a new or experienced head of internal audit, it would be wise to consider how these themes are addressed in Internal Audit’s strategic plan. Weekly Top 5 Some of you may have noticed that I recently updated my job title to Sr. Director of Audit Committee and Corporate Governance Engagement, which means that I will now be full-time focused on advocating for our great profession in the Corporate Governance ecosystem. Here is my Top 5 list of reasons that I am excited about this shift. (and a bonus item about why it is bittersweet) 1) I love sharing how integral having a robust internal audit function is to good corporate governance. That is literally my job!!! 2) This role is all about the long-term growth and success of the internal audit profession. 3) I am not competing against anyone. I can feel the support of our full profession encouraging and supporting me. 4) Many of our stakeholders have misconceptions about what internal audit is and what it can be. I am working full-time to dispel those misconceptions. 5) Having one boss and one job description is a lot easier than having two bosses and two job descriptions. However, this shift is a little bittersweet. For the past 5 years, I have had the pleasure of serving audit leaders. I have loved the fact that networking with them, helping them, and learning from them has been built right into my job description. I will never cut the bonds I have built, but it is going to take a bit more concerted effort.
