The “silent infrastructure” that the world depends on is at risk.
“The supply chain we rely on to measure changes in the Earth’s shape, orientation, gravity field and movements of satellites is weak. More than 50% of the geodetic ground infrastructure is ageing and degrading. We need more, newer and better geodetic infrastructure. The consequence of weak links in the geodesy supply chain is that the positioning, navigation and timing applications on which we rely every day will degrade in accuracy. In turn, this will degrade the quality of our decision-making. This also impacts on our ability to measure, monitor and mitigate the impacts of global challenges like climate change and natural hazards.” Nicholas Brown, Head of Office at UN-GGCE to GIM International this week. ##### NEW PAPER PUBLISHED IN JOURNAL OF GEODESY##### OPEN ACCESS Our new paper "Modeling trends and periodic components in geodetic time series: a unified approach" is now published in Journal of Geodesy (Springer) and available online. My top co-authors are 👨🎓 Federico Maddanu, Anna Klos, Janusz Bogusz from the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geodesy, Warsaw (Poland), Tommaso Proietti from the Department of Economics and Finance, Universitá di Roma (Italy). #Kalman filter #stochastic amplitude #periodical component # time series analysis #GPS #climate The major questions we address: 1. The deterministic approach to model time series includes trend, annual, and semi-annual periodic components having constant amplitude and phase-lag. 👀 Problem: 2. We neglect the time-variability or stochasticity of trend and seasonal components: potentially leading to inadequate interpretations, up to masking important geophysical phenomena. 👎 Our solution: 3. the fractional Sinusoidal Waveform process (fSWp): more in the next post 😃 Our applications: 4. What an incredible day in London with friends and colleagues at the Ground Engineering Magazine's #GESmart Geotechnics conference! It was evident from all the presentations that the combination of data, AI, and engineering judgment is both the present and the future of geotechnical engineering.
