It's sad to hear about the closure of the non-profit organisation, Girls in Tech, Inc. That said, Guidewire's chief evangelist, Laura Drabik, suggests this could present an opportunity "... to rethink how we work together to bring women together in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (Stem) organisations and initiatives to create a greater force forward on this important topic." https://lnkd.in/eUhdSzyv Adriana Gascoigne #DEI #genderequality #STEM #skillsgap Clare Ruel

Let this sink in. 👉 While women make up 50% of the non-STEM workforce, they represent only 29% in STEM careers globally. The challenge intensifies with career advancement—just 12% of STEM Chief Executives are women. This gap is more than a statistic; it's a call to action. By supporting our mission, you're not just donating; you're investing in the potential of women and non-binary people to lead, innovate, and shape the tech industry. Together, we can break barriers and redefine STEM leadership. 💪💜 🌟 Donate today: https://lnkd.in/gqF5drZk #womenshistorymonth #womenintech #womeninstem

I thought I was contributing to an October 2023 non-profit blog about Black Women’s Lives, specifically around policies to reduce inequalities need better quality data. Instead, it was something else entirely, released on March 1, 2024 via Twitter (7K+ followers) and LinkedIn (12k+followers). It doesn’t promote Black women, policies that’ll benefit Black women or recommend inclusive data quality strategies. My written responses were quoted out of context. DataedX Group’s name was misspelled. My name was misspelled. TWICE. I asked for corrections last week. No response. No corrections have been issued on the blog. As an entrepreneur, it’s hard to get press coverage so that more people know who I am and what I do. And this sort of disappointing outcome is the risk I take to get noticed to new people. It feels like a setback. It was a complete waste of my time, minimized my contributions/impact and did nothing to help broaden awareness about my services. I feel like I was used, manipulated and abused. I’m far less inclined to engage in another “interview” without a fuller vetting process. This is on the ugly side of #entrepreneurship. Let me close the unimpressive loop on this *ugly side* of #entrepreneurship. After a few email exchanges with the article writer and the head of strategic communications at Equal Measures 2030, apologies were provided, my name and company name were corrected and they're reviewing their editorial and communication processes. They said on March 13th that "we are committed to rectifying this situation in a manner that respects your wishes and contributions. Should you choose to discuss potential corrective actions or if you wish to have your interview removed or amended in any way, please know I am here to facilitate that." Given their core values: - We are guided by feminist principles and a belief in the importance of gender justice - We are collaborative and believe in the power of women’s collective action - We are rigorous in our analysis and transparent about our methodology and approach - We are outspoken - We listen and learn And their list of funders: Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Fondation CHANEL, Plan International Netherlands, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and Thomson Reuters Foundation. I thought that they were bout it-bout it! So I responded on March 14th with my recommendations for their atonement: "As a path forward, I'd be interested in exploring ways Equal Measures 2030 can highlight my 3rd Black Women in Data Summit, happening September 14-15, 2024 in Atlanta. Preferred engagement activities include fiscal support (session sponsorship starts at $5000), spotlighting BWD with a blog article and warm introductions to partnering organizations interested in supporting BWD." Crickets. No response. I'm left with the impression that they're more about receiving a check and gaining proximity to clout than being about making a change. I'm no longer emotional invested in this situation, tbh. This is me sharing how to followup, giving folks another chance and deciding to let go of engagements that don't serve you or your business. So my eyes are back on the prize. For those who are willing to support BWD, you can give here: https://lnkd.in/e_Q8C_cx #BWDSummit24

A Seasoned Serial Entrepreneur with a Strong Engineering Background and a passion for Technology driven innovation
2moWhile the closure marks the end of an era, it also serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of continuing the fight for gender equality in tech. The legacy of Girls in Tech will live on through the achievements and contributions of the women it has empowered. It is now up to all of us to ensure that their mission and vision are not forgotten, and to continue supporting and advocating for women in technology.
