A new study reveals an alarming increase in critical limb ischemia (CLI) cases among young adults in the U.S. CLI, a severe stage of peripheral arterial disease (PAD), reduces blood flow and can lead to amputation. Early detection can significantly improve outcomes. With continued research and proactive steps, a future where amputation is no longer common is possible. The study emphasizes the need to enhance surveillance and raise awareness of risk factors. By doing so, we can empower patients and help prevent issues before they become debilitating conditions. Thanks for this post. Podiatrists should be particularly vigilant in checking for both peripheral artery disease and peripheral neuropathy in type 2 poorly managed obese children around the age of 18. This obesity factor leading to PAD and DPN became especially prevalent with the onset of Covid 19, when young children/adults were inactive, housebound, and overeating, sometimes leading to very high BMI levels.
