Mark is clear about the brutal reality of starting a company. But what truly intrigued me is Mark's insight into scaling a business. Alignment. It may sound straightforward, but achieving alignment is a monumental task for any CEO. 🧩 People: Do you have all the right people? (And no wrong people) 🔭 Vision: Does everyone know where the business is headed? The 5-year goal. 🚀 Focus: What is the one thing the business excels at? The cornerstone around which the company will scale. 💛 Values: Does everyone know and live the values? 🔥 Engagement: Is the entire team vested in the company's success? 🎯 Priority: Is everyone working on the few highest impact initiatives? (And saying No to all the other potentially great ideas) Mark is unequivocal — alignment can 10x your business. I agree completely. Any vision and strategy are worth nothing without alignment. And there is no alignment without vision and strategy. It's the most powerful force, but it's also a significant challenge. How aligned is your company? 'This is about humility in leadership - you have an enormous amount of knowledge, insight and creativity in your organisation, this approach means you tap into this' I discovered this podcast yesterday, and it's really well worth a listen. 'Fail fast and cheap' is one of those phrases you hear a lot, but outside of startups or larger companies facing a major challenge or challenger brands where it might be 'part of the DNA', experimentation, testing and learning fast is still relatively rare. But many companies still have the mindset that 'we know this is true, therefore we just need to execute'. Some leaders believe that they have to have all the answers. But this can be a very good way to waste money and time, and demoralise your people too. There is real and robust business benefit to experimentation via design thinking. And it's not about testing products, it's a way of 'disciplined learning', finding out what you don't know and saying 'this is a guess, so let's find a quick and cheap way of finding out if we're right or wrong'. Experimenting is not difficult and expensive. But it is about intentional collaboration across your organisation. 'Running some workshops with a cross-section of the team added a lot of validity to ideas...they were able to expand and add detail to those ideas. The time it took from developing an idea and then running an experiment was a few weeks, and then we very quickly know that something was either going to work or wasn't' Experimenting is as important for internal service areas (People, culture, ops etc) as it is for client-facing products and services. It demonstrates transparency, showcases a smart and disciplined way to take necessary risks, and shows to your people your desire to collaborate across functions and just try things out. -- ♻💡 Useful?
