Update 8/5/24: I have written an open letter to schools that charge fees to therapists. I have attached it below. Please let me know if you would like a copy of it for your own advocacy 👩🎤 *** I'd love to hear your thoughts on this one... There is an emerging practice of schools charging allied health providers for access to deliver services to NDIS participants on school premises. Are schools just trying to get in on some “NDIS action” or are they finding there are real costs to facilitate the therapy for their students on school grounds? Because the costs vary greatly, it would be interesting to see a breakdown for what they charge for. Some schools let you waltz in with nothing but a WWCC, others have more rigorous expectations. I'm keen to hear how others in our field are tackling this issue. We already have tight margins, maintaining our own premises and we provide company vehicles to facilitate our services. And with wages, superannuation, and rent all on the rise, absorbing these additional expenses from school access fees is not something we had budgeted for. One solution we've considered is requesting that schools directly invoice session fees to the parents, especially when parents have specifically engaged our services at the school. However, I understand the potential impact this may have on families, as these fees typically range from $10-30 per session. Generally speaking it can be families with limited transport or resources that opt for the school based sessions. My concern is that if this becomes a widespread practice among schools, it could significantly limit our ability to provide services in school settings, ultimately reducing accessibility for participants. I'm starting the conversation to hear what you think so we can consider potential solutions, I'd love to hear all perspectives.

Last week, #oaklandcounty MiPHY data was available and 65% of the seventh graders that participated reported they have been told by a medical provider they have #asthma. A number anticipated to rise as we continue learning post COVID pandemic. As we look to support the #health and #safety of our #youth and reduce #absenteeism, it will be important to look holistically for answers and bring in a range of appropriately trained health professionals, like our National Association of School Nurses to strategically plan. Many families only learn after a diagnosis about required processes like 504 plans or IEPs, how do our processes and supports like this impact attendance in the long run? https://lnkd.in/gKfVmYKH

Speech and Language Therapist working with SENCOs who are fed up with responding reactively to their SLCN, and want a system they can stick to
Becca will work together with you and your child’s setting to create a thorough, detailed and evidenced request to the local authority (LA) for an Education Health Care Needs Assessment (EHCNA) or ‘Family Conversation’. This will increase the likelihood of the request being successful and a full needs assessment taking place. This will include: · Meeting with parents / carers to gather information · Requesting and including school/setting based information and information from health and any other services · Submitting a completed and quality checked by you Family Conversation · Current provision map (a thorough overview of the interventions and provisions your child already accesses), and future planning of what else is needed to better support your child’s needs. #speechandlanguage #speechandlanguagetherapy #speechandlanguagetherapist #speechtherapist #speechandlanguagecpd #SLCN #SLCNsystems #TeamSLCN #SLCNtribe #SEN #SEND #SENDInstagram #earlyyearseducator #primaryteaching #primaryteacher #primary #primaryheadteachers #primaryschool #ect #earlycareerteacher #earlycareerteachers #learningdisabilities #autismacceptance #downsyndrome #dldseeme #developmentallanguagedisorder

May Morsal 23: Attendance This is a absolute nightmare in schools at the minute. Attendance rates still lower than pre-pandemic levels but the pandemic was half a decade ago. There are a number of factors at play: 1. We were told don't go anywhere if you feel ill during 2019 to 2021. 2. We were encouraged to work from home and therefore a dependency upon the comfort of this hybrid working and learning. 3. With more parents at home there is an ease to allowing their children to stay at home. 4. There is a disillusioned group of children from year 3 to 9 (yes 2, 10 and 11 are also disillusioned to an extent) who have had an experience of Education that is unlike anyone else's since WW2. Some of this group are struggling to fall back into the status quo. Then the movement from the government and nhs is to patronise parents and carers rather than encourage, while they increase fines just to kick the most vulnerable when they are struggling enough. I would be very keen to see adverts and posters like the one I have shared to be removed and rethought. There is a better way. Thoughts?

Interesting article in Schools Week where Sue Johnson and Matthew Cooke, current and past chairs of the National Association of Virtual School Heads, reflect on the system challenges for Virtual Schools. It really underscores the urgent need for improved support for Virtual Heads to effectively address the educational needs of children in care.
