Remember that guitar is a commitment… You have to approach it like a long-term relationship. Which implies a few things: 1- You cannot get the benefits of the relationship without the work 2- You need to love the relationship MORE than the goals you have within it 3- Your relationship with your guitar will go through phases, some easier than others, but if you keep investing in it, you will reach levels of freedom and joy you cannot even imagine! What to play when improvising? This is probably one of the most common questions guitarists ask themselves when presented with a chord progression. What should you play when you have to take a solo and you don’t necessarily know the key?? The first step is to recognize which harmonic context you are in: 1- Tonal context: These are built around a major or minor scale. They are the most popular contexts by far and can be recognized by the presence of 3 chords or more that switch rapidly from one to the next (usually one chord per bar) 2- Modal context: These are built around modes. They are more common in the styles of Jazz or related to Jazz, but you can find them in any style occasionally. They are usually made of a VAMP over one chord or alternating between two chords. 3- The Blues. Major or minor Blues contexts are often associated with the classic 12-bar progression, but not always. Of course, once you know the context, you still have to analyze the chords and figure out which key, or mode you should be using. But it will already orient your reasoning and help you know what and how to play. Hope this helps!

Here is how to NOT bend like an amateur… Bends are not this magical thing you can just randomly insert into a scale to sound cool… Actually bends can sound pretty horrible if you don’t know what you’re doing. Remember that a bend just increases the pitch of a note towards another note. But that other note: 1- Needs to be in the scale or at least be intentionally out of the scale (if not it will sound bad) 2- Needs to actually be in tune… and you need to use your ear for this. So practice playing the note you are bending towards first and then bend towards the note until you match the pitch of the first one. Do this with half-step, whole-step and one-and-a-half-step bends. And when in doubt always bend a little more than you think.

Now the craziest thing is that I 100% agree with all those points. And if THIS is what music theory could bring you, would you not try to learn it??? I guess the last argument would be: “Sure… but I don’t have 10 years to spare trying to figure it out, so I would rather just enjoy music and not worry about it since it’s just a hobby or passion”. The thing is that it actually doesn’t take that long to learn what you NEED about theory. Sure, you can nerd out on it your whole life and go down many rabbit holes about obscure useless notions if you want… So does the academia, which is largely responsible for the bad reputation of theory. But in reality, building a solid foundation of theory and understanding the notions that are TRULY USEFUL can be done in a FEW MONTHS, without any shortcuts or dumbing-downs, and without needing to read staff notation. Michael Gumley asked me why I believe guitarists struggle with theory or worse, avoid it on purpose… I think one of the main reasons is that they assume it’s a theory and therefore can be debated or has yet to be proven. In reality, music theory is mostly definitions… what is a C major chord? Or an A minor scale? This is not theoretical. They are the tools one uses every day to make music and are utterly practical. Knowing how to name them and understanding how to build them can only be beneficial! Music theory is simply not a sexy word… I think we should come up with a new one that’s a little less off-putting. #guitarlessons #musictheory #guitarteacher #guitarist #guitarplayer
