Remember your first flip phone? While Motorola and Nokia were dominating the flip phone markets in the late 90s and early 2000s, Samsung was also having a significant market share for these devices. When Apple launched the smartphone, the industry moved away from flip phones and hasn't been able to produce huge sales profits like it did in the past. That was until Samsung made a comeback with its Flip phones and introduced foldable devices. Since then, Samsung has been dominating the foldable smartphone market. They've just launched the Galaxy Fold 6 and Flip 6, with their closest competitor most likely being Xiaomi's Mix Fold devices. However, things may change if Apple releases its version of the foldable iPhone in 2026. According to this report, Apple's foldable iPhone has progressed from the ideation stage and would mark the biggest hardware design revamp for the company's most popular product. So, will foldable phones continue to be a popular device? Judging by the units sold, the foldable phone market will continue to see a demand, and Apple could find itself tapping into huge profits should their devices be a hit. #foldablephone #samsungfold #apple #foldabledevices

The iPhone 15 Pro Max is on the left, in titanium, and the Galaxy S24 Ultra is on the right, also in titanium. Photo: Florence Ion / Gizmodo The latest charts from analysts at IDC show Samsung has reclaimed the top spot on the global smartphone charts for the first quarter of the year, knocking Apple down to number two. Apple was dominating the charts for a brief second. But now, Samsung has the lead with 20.8% of the global smartphone shipments for the first quarter, compared to Apple’s 17.3%. Apple Unveils Its iPhone 15 and Apple Watch Series 9 Apple’s sales have slipped almost ten percent since the beginning of the year. It could be due to the faltering economy and declining iPhone sales in China. It could also be that the iPhone is not as exciting as the AI-first Android devices and folding smartphones. The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro deliver on the polished Apple experience, but overall, they’re missing some of that oomph that the rest of the world’s smartphone users seem drawn toward. This year’s Galaxy S24 series launch included exclusive features for early buyers on behalf of Google. If you want to be among the first to try out Circle to Search, you could trade in your old Samsung for a new phone for immediate access. Other devices have since followed through with the Galaxy AI updates, but the early exclusivity boosted the brand. There’s also the fact that the rest of the world isn’t binary like the North American smartphone market. There aren’t just two dominating players but a whole spectrum of offerings that seem like a better deal than Apple’s closed devices. The IDC list shows Xiaomi, a brand that isn’t even sold in the U.S., holding steady in the number three spot, followed by Transsion, which manufactures Tecno devices. Oppo, the company behind OnePlus smartphones and smartwatches, also remains in the top five. I’m curious whether OnePlus’s solid releases over the last few years have helped Oppo retain its top-of-the-chart status. Oppo was among the first overseas phone makers to embrace the folding form factor. Rumors are percolating that the iPhone may give the Android platform more of a run for its money later this year. Leaks already point to the iPhone 16 being chock full of Samsung-like flair with Cupertino’s take on AI. And with Apple being more lenient with repairs, a secondary market could be bubbling to help overthrow some of the budget Android mainstays. Want more of Gizmodo’s consumer electronics picks? The iQoo 13 is a perfect teaser of what 2025 smartphones will be like Table of Contents Table of Contents Performance without a tax Who needs a power bank? A sum total of terrific parts Dear brands, please pay attention to this! The curtain was about to fall for 2024, but before the year wrapped up for good, we got a glimpse of what is to come in 2025 for smartphone enthusiasts. So far, things look good. Batteries are getting bigger, the performance bar keeps rising, and cameras are leaning more into pro-grade and artistic wizardry. Yet, the rising costs are also a lingering concern. Of course, barely any innovation comes sans a handsome price. However, some outliers are still carrying the mantle once championed by the likes of OnePlus. The Red Magic 10 Pro surprised me with an all-out power-packed approach to sway mobile gaming fans. Yet, it was not without its own set of compromises. Enter the iQoo 13 from the house of China’s Vivo. Rocking the same $650 sticker price as its predecessor, the latest iQoo phone boasts everything that will shine atop this year’s flagship phones. It’s so good that the current-gen iPhones and Samsung Galaxy phones look like a bad deal. Performance without a tax Nadeem Sarwar / Digital Trends Soon after Qualcomm revealed the Snapdragon 8 Elite, we started hearing rumors of its successor and a slightly watered-down trim to offer a more affordable option to smartphone makers. The latter isn’t an alien strategy for the chipmaker. The latest outing from Qualcomm was the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3, which went for a less powerful core cluster, a slower cellular modem, and a few cuts in the camera capabilities. Geekbench 6 single-core and multi-core comparative test results. Nadeem Sarwar / Digital Trends It has allowed the likes of Motorola to make less expensive foldable phones, while Chinese smartphone labels have been able to deliver fantastic midrange phones. Some brands, however, duck that cost dilemma and go all-in. iQoo is one of the wallet breavehearts. The iQoo 13 is one of the first phones with the Snapdragon 8 Elite to hit the shelves. It’s not a gaming phone, mind you. As such, my expectations were pretty modest, especially with thermal management and performance throttling. Comparative results on 3DMark stress tests. Nadeem Sarwar / Digital Trends Surprisingly, this phone surpassed my expectations. Even under sustained load, the massive 7,000 square-millimeter vapor chamber did an admirable job of keeping the phone cool and running in the top brackets of its peak performance. Look at the throttling graph below after running the device at 40 threads. The phone only dropped to 85% of its peak processing power, but it’s the stability metrics that impress the most. Nadeem Sarwar / Digital Trends For comparison, the Samsung Galaxy S24 (which starts at $800) dipped as low as 60% of its peak performance, with a continued downhill trend. Also of note...

📱 Remember Amazon’s Fire Phone or the HTC Facebook Phone? No? You’re not alone. These quirky gadgets are just a couple of examples of how tech innovators have taken bold risks to stand out. While today’s smartphones focus on sleek design and smooth functionality, there was a time when wild ideas were all the rage. Take the Fire Phone, with its 3D-style parallax display that no one really asked for. Or the Facebook Phone, which turned your home screen into, well, Facebook – whether you liked it or not. Then there was the OnePlus 7 Pro with its James Bond-style pop-up camera, followed by the 8 Pro’s accidental X-ray filter (swiftly disabled for obvious reasons). And let’s not forget the dual-screen Kyocera Echo, the cross-shaped LG Wing, or the DIY customization attempts like Google’s Project Ara and Motorola’s snap-on mods. Some of these ideas flopped. But they remind us that innovation often comes with risks. Sometimes, those risks lead to breakthroughs. Other times, they make for great stories. 🤔 Did you ever own one of these devices? What smartphones do you and your team use today? Let us know in the comments! #Innovation #Smartphones #VSLComputers

While not quite a #duopoly, #Apple and #Samsung have long been known to produce the most popular #smartphones from a #global perspective. Over the past years, however, #Chinese #tech companies have started catching up and, at times, even overtaking Apple's #iPhone product lines. Our chart based on data from the IDC Quarterly #MobilePhone Tracker shows that between January and March 2024, roughly one out of five of the 289 million smartphones shipped were Samsung devices, while Apple commanded a market share of 17.3 percent. #Xiaomi, however, wasn't far behind with a 14.1 percent share in the market translating to around 41 million smartphones shipped in the first quarter of the year. Rounding out the four smartphone vendors with the highest amount of devices #shipped is #Transsion, which produced every tenth smartphone sold in the first three months of 2024. Although the Chinese company entered IDC's top 5 for the first time in the second quarter of 2023, it's been around since 2006. Its devices have become increasingly popular in #emergingmarkets like the #African continent. Looking at smartphone vendor market share over time, Apple and Samsung have been on top for most of the first quarters since 2014. The notable exception is #Huawei, which rose to prominence in the latter half of the 2010s and even managed to overtake Samsung for the best-selling smartphone brand worldwide in the second quarter of 2020 after already coming within 3.3 percentage points in the three months prior. Huawei's rise was abruptly halted by the end of 2020, reportedly due to the increasing pressure of #US. #sanctions on the company. Its shoes were quickly filled by its #Chinesecompetitors Xiaomi and #Oppo, which had combined market shares ranging from 22 to 25 percent in the first quarters of 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024. https://lnkd.in/drdywxG7
