Can you believe this? We asked a service manager from a top German train company at #InnoTrans about their strategy for circuit board repair and he said this 👇🎬🤦♂️ This rolling stock manufacturer wants the industry to believe in their sustainability claims and credentials but they're not shy to admit that they just don't want to repair the thousands of electronic components fitted to their trains. The manager was quite lighthearted about the E-waste his company creates gesticulating to illustrate how circuit boards are thrown away...🚮 The comment that repairing is more expensive than buying new can be debunked in two ways: 👉 If you build up capability to repair during the in-service years, obsolescence will take much longer to affect you. Spare parts inventory will remain at healthy levels for longer and historical fault data at IC level will provide plenty of opportunity to buy enough components or improve the circuit board reliability. If you mitigate obsolescence from day one, you'll be shielded from your supply chain claims that "it's cheaper to buy new". 👉 Where will the money come from? When you send an out of warranty equipment back to the OEM for repair and are forced to wait 6..9..12 months, 90% of the price they charge is their profit. Only 10% is actually covering parts and labour. This is how many ABI customers and Repair, Don't Waste! members save millions of Euros every years with some recovering 10x the investment in setting up a level 3 repair facility powered by ABI's systems in under a year.
