Intercontinental shipping has change our consumption as compare to what we've seen back then. 90% of global trade are moved by sea. Between 1980-2022 deadweight tonnage of container ships grew from 11million metric tons to about 293million metric tons with over 5million TEUs. This large #standardized metal boxes originally founded in 1950s by an American trucking company owner Malcom P Mclean (1914-2001). The invention was mainly to #solve a time consuming, labor intensive process of unloading cargo and to reduce damage and theft. He #conceptualized the idea of standardized container that could be seamlessly transferred between different mode of transportation. His first #breakthrough was when he successfully created what he called "Sea-Land container" He tested the idea onto a converted World War II, loaded 58 containers, set sails from Newark to port of Houston. Port Houston ended 2023 with an 11% increase in #container volumes over December 2022, with the majority of that increase coming from loaded boxes. Movements of empty containers, which are expensive to handle and were left in huge volumes after the pandemic, were down for 2023, resulting in a 4% overall drop in containers handled over the prior year. Exports, both containerized and otherwise, had a great 2023, with a strong demand for resin leading the way. The Energy Capital of the World's home port is also well-positioned for a solid 2024, with investments in container handling and other onshore infrastructure and continued expansion of the Houston Ship Channel--the busiest waterway in the world.
