Aqaba Port Sees Surge in Cargo Handling, Reaching 7 Million Tons by August End Shipping Arabia, September 20, 2024 — Mahmoud Khalifat, General Manager of the Aqaba Company for Ports Management and Operation, has announced a significant increase in cargo handling volume at Aqaba Port, with figures reaching 7.124 million tons by the end of August, marking a 10% increase from the previous year. In a press interview, Khalifat reported that the port handled 8 grain-laden vessels this month, necessitating additional trips to expedite operations. The total number of vessels serviced by the port by the end of August stood at 1,116, a 16% rise over last year's 964 vessels during the same period. This uptick is attributed to the port’s robust reputation and its operational capacity, which continues to attract regional investors and traders despite current regional challenges. Khalifat emphasized the port's full operational status and effective utilization of all its equipment. The Ministry of Transport has responded to the increased activity by boosting the number of truck trips from 8 to 10 per day to better manage the flow of goods. Daily, around 400 trucks are processed at the port, transferring goods to various destinations. Significant investments have been made to ensure the efficiency and safety of operations. Last year, Aqaba Ports contracted a firm to inspect all handling equipment to global safety standards, leading to the certification of operational equipment and the decommissioning of unfit machinery. Additionally, the introduction of two new grain unloaders, each with a capacity of 24,000 tons per hour, will further enhance the speed and cost-effectiveness of grain handling. Looking forward, Khalifat outlined a comprehensive plan for 2024-2026, valued at 30 million dinars, aimed at modernizing the port’s handling equipment and reorganizing the handling yards to meet global public safety standards. These improvements are part of a broader strategy endorsed by the Ports' Board of Directors, led by Chairman Engineer Hussein Safadi, who has been instrumental in implementing bold measures to elevate the port’s standards to align with global best practices. Aqaba Port Experiences a 15% Drop in Container Traffic in 2024 Shipping Arabia, August 11, 2024 — Dr. Dureid Mahasneh, Chairman of the Jordan Shipping Association, reported a significant decline in container volumes at Aqaba Port. During the first seven months of the year, the port managed 453,178 containers, marking a 15% decrease compared to the 535,390 containers handled over the same period last year. The decrease was initially more pronounced at 47% at the start of the year but moderated to 15% by the end of July, indicating a gradual recovery in container traffic. This downturn in container activity reflects broader challenges in the regional shipping industry, which has seen varying shifts in ship traffic patterns. Despite the overall decrease in container numbers, the volume of container ships arriving at the port increased from 26 to 49 during the period, signaling a potential rebound. Conversely, the maritime traffic through the Cape of Good Hope witnessed a substantial increase, with ship movements climbing from 9,865 to 17,203, an escalation of 74.4%. This is in stark contrast to the movements through the Bab al-Mandab Strait, which experienced a significant drop of 62%, reducing ship numbers from 15,890 last year to just 6,096 this year. The Suez Canal also saw a marked decline in traffic, with the number of ships transiting falling from 15,654 in the first seven months of 2023 to 7,672 during the same period in 2024. These shifts in maritime routes are reflective of ongoing global adjustments within the shipping industry, which are impacting local operations at strategic ports like Aqaba. Despite these challenges, there are expectations within the Jordan Shipping Association that container traffic at Aqaba Port may normalize by the year's end as conditions improve. 🚢 Aqaba Container Terminal: Heading Towards Normalization Amid Challenges 🚢 While comparisons to last year naturally show a decline due to the Red Sea crisis, the 15% drop by July, down from 47% in January, suggests gradual recovery at Aqaba Container Terminal. This trend supports the chairman's expectation that volumes could normalize by year-end, despite ongoing regional tensions and the suspension of ship transits through Bab el Mandeb. Notably, while 49 ships were handled this July versus 26 last year, the lower average TEU per ship (1,820 vs. 2,549) explains why higher ship calls haven’t fully boosted volumes. 📖 Learn more about the Jordan Shipping Association Chairman’s perspective in the article below. 🔗 Follow Shipping Arabia for the latest maritime news and updates in the Middle East! #JSA #Aqaba #Maritime #ACT #APMTerminals #Jordan #ShippingArabia #ShipsandShipping

With the first-quarter results in, the consensus among shipping lines is an expectation that the Red Sea blockade will continue. In response, the Port of Salalah, located in the Sultanate of Oman, has launched multi-modal service options that provide a viable alternative to the time-consuming and more costly re-routing around the Cape of Good Hope. Strategically positioned at the crossroads of trade between Asia and Europe, and servicing markets spanning East Africa, the Red Sea, the Indian Subcontinent, and the Arabian Gulf, the Port of Salalah is operated by APM Terminals as part of its global terminal network. It operates both a container terminal and a general cargo terminal. With an annual capacity of 5 million TEU and expansion currently in progress to add an additional 30% capacity, the Port of Salalah is ideally located on the main ocean routes connecting South and East Asia with Europe, North Africa, the Americas, and the upper Gulf with East Africa. No detour from East-West shipping routes Unlike other popular transshipment ports in the region, no detour from the main East-West shipping routes into the Gulf of Oman is required, saving a 4-5 day detour from the main east-west shipping routes. #bunkering #energy #shipping #marine #maritime #petroleum #shipowners #decarbonization #digitalization #energytransition #oilandgas #cleanenergy #carboncapture #ports #greenenergy #greenshipping #netzero #sustainability #bunkermarket #europe #usa #uk #canada #uae #netherlands #denmark #norway #sweden #finland #singapore #oman #portofsalalah #salalah #salalahport #apmterminals https://lnkd.in/dB6gj5pQ
