𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘂𝗯𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗼𝘂𝘀 #𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 #𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲: #Polystyrene is made from styrene building blocks and is the most widely used plastic in terms of volume, for example in packaging. Unlike PET, which can now be produced and recycled using biotechnological methods, the production of polystyrene has so far been a purely chemical process. The plastic can’t be broken down by biotechnological means, either. Researchers are looking for ways to rectify this: An international team headed by Dr. Xiao-Dan Li from the Paul Scherrer Institute, Switzerland, in collaboration with Professor Dirk Tischler, head of the Microbial biotechnology research group at Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Germany, has decoded a bacterial enzyme that plays a key role in styrene degradation. This paves the way for biotechnological application. The researchers published their findings in the journal Nature Chemistry from May, 14, 2024. 🌟 I am pleased to announce the publication of my latest scientific article! 📄 This work reports the synthesis of #lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) from #Kraft lignin (KL) using a #green, #cost-effective, and #scalable #hybrid process and their incorporation into poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) to obtain functional films for #active #packaging via #electrospinning technology. 🔬✨ Key findings: ✔ PHBV/LNPs materials exhibited superior properties compared to PHBV/KL ones, including: • Enhanced thermal stability • Improved UV-vis blocking, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activity • Better dispersion within the polymer matrix, maintaining mechanical properties and improving barrier properties, including a 10x reduction in oxygen permeability. 💡 LNPs demonstrated good #compatibility with the polymer matrix without requiring additional chemical functionalization, ensuring a more uniform dispersion than neat KL. At higher loadings (up to 18 wt%), LNPs contributed as an integral part of the polymer matrix rather than a simple additive, supporting the goal of increasing the biowaste content in biopolymers. 🌍♻ This eco-friendly and scalable strategy enables the production of durable, high-performance packaging materials, positioning PHBV/LNPs as a compelling alternative to conventional plastics and a significant step forward in advancing a #biocircular #economy. This achievement would not have been possible without the support and collaboration of some truly extraordinary people. 🚀 Excited to share our latest research article, part of my PhD work, published in Journal of Environmental Management. 💡This study highlights the potential of 𝑆. 𝑝𝑎𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑢𝑟𝑖𝑖-induced precipitation for sustainable metals recovery from waste streams. https://lnkd.in/eJMe9yHC 🔑Key Findings: ✔️ 𝑆. 𝑝𝑎𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑢𝑟𝑖𝑖 significantly enhances Cu and Zn removal in VFAs-containing media ✔️ Chemical precipitation plays a great role in Cu²⁺ removal ✔️ Ammonia and VFAs complexing capacity negatively affects Cu and Zn removal efficiency 🌍 Beyond advancing our understanding of microbial-induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) under varying conditions, this work paves the way for integrating environmental technologies such as acidogenic anaerobic bioleaching and MICP to foster circular economy practices♻️. Spurring more biofilm growth for efficient wastewater treatment Foaming plastic carriers create uneven surfaces, more area for necessary microorganisms. Wastewater treatment could be more effective using foamed plastic carriers in the moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) process, a research team has found.
