27 July is World Head and Neck Cancer Day. Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma is the sixth most common type of cancer in the world. The overall 5-year survival rate is around 63%. However, patients with a more advanced diagnosis have a much lower survival rate. Our pathologist, Dr Bridget Chang-McDonald, is investigating squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue, a type of head and neck cancer. To better understand how this aggressive tumour behaves, she is investigating how the tumour interacts with its surrounding support tissue and immune cells. This knowledge may then be used to develop improved treatment options for this debilitating cancer. This research project has been made possible with the help of grants from Research For Life and Head & Neck Cancer Foundation Aotearoa. Join us in raising awareness and supporting research efforts to improve the lives of those affected by head and neck cancers. #WorldHeadAndNeckCancerDay #HeadAndNeckCancer #CancerResearch #SupportCancerResearch #SquamousCellCarcinoma #TongueCancer #OncologyResearch #EarlyDetectionSavesLives #CancerAwareness

❓ Did you know May is National Cancer Research Month? (Me either 🤷♀️) ❓ Did you know that you don't have to have cancer to contribute to studies and clinical trials researching cures for cancer? (Well, now you know!😉) After working on projects the past year in support of the The Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center, I figured it was time to practice what I preach and sign myself up to participate in a study aimed at preventing cancer. The WISDOM study is bringing together "100,000 diverse women from across the US to find the safest and most effective way to detect breast cancer." The study requires minimal effort, is highly inclusive (any woman who has not had breast cancer, identifies as female, is aged 30-74 and lives in the US) and takes less than 15 minutes to sign up! (Yes, it is THAT easy) Imagine the impact we could have if each of us found ONE clinical trial or study to join? Today I challenge my friends and colleagues to consider how they can contribute to medical research in support of finding more cures and better treatment for all cancer types. I even made it easy for you by providing a few links below 👇 The WISDOM Study ➡ https://lnkd.in/d5E4Jpcp Full compendium of clinical trials ➡ https://lnkd.in/dZmUUJPs

✨ Colorectal cancer is on the rise, becoming a leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S. With alarming statistics revealing that 80% of adults aged 45 to 50 are not getting screened, urgent action is needed to reverse these trends. That's why the American Cancer Society and the Colorectal Cancer Alliance are teaming up to raise awareness and provide accessible resources, such as the screening quiz on YourColonIs45(dot)org, empowering everyone to take proactive steps towards early detection and prevention. #YourColonIs45 #ColorectalCancerAwareness #EarlyDetectionSavesLives https://lnkd.in/eJ9H5vMQ

In a recent report, the American Cancer Society shared a mix of heartening progress and lingering concerns in the battle against cancer. The good news first: Cancer deaths in the United States have seen a significant decline, thanks to advancements in early detection, treatment, and declines in smoking. However, as we celebrate this progress, there's a vital asterisk we can't ignore. The report reveals a projected rise to over two million new cancer cases in 2024 - for the first time ever. This report underscores the critical need for continued investment in cancer research and innovation. By understanding the nuances, we can work toward more targeted and effective interventions for a greater level of care than we’ve seen before. There are an estimated 19 million cancer survivors in the United States, a number that continues to increase as cancer treatments improve. Cancer survivorship care is a crucial but under-developed part of the cancer care continuum, and little is known about the availability of survivorship services for adult-onset cancer on a national basis. Published in JAMA Network Open, USC Norris members Drs. Kimberly Miller and David Freyer collaborated with leadership from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (ACS CoC), the premiere accrediting organization for quality cancer care in the US, to understand the current landscape of survivorship services at CoC-accredited organizations. This research establishes a needed benchmark for survivorship care delivery in the US, identifies key service gaps, and indicates opportunity areas for interventions to improve the health outcomes of cancer survivors. March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer death in the US, behind only lung cancer. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) estimates that 153,020 people in the US received a CRC diagnosis in 2023, and approximately 52,550 died of it. In fact, CRC is now the #1 cancer killer among men under 50, and #2 for women under 50, just behind breast cancer, according to a recent American Cancer Society report. CRC awareness is important because many cases are preventable. Screening by colonoscopy can prevent this cancer by finding and removing precancerous polyps and can also detect the cancer at early stages, when treatment is more likely to be successful. And today, March 1, is #DressInBlueDay! By wearing blue, you bring awareness to this disease and support and honor all who are impacted by colorectal cancer. Let’s come together to raise awareness, share stories, ensure our voices are heard, and make a difference. #colorectalawarenessmonth #dressinblueday #getscreened #nevertooyoung #cancerawareness #earlydetectionsaveslives

Today, the American Cancer Society released our 2024 Cancer Facts and Figures report. The data reveal that over 2 million NEW cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed in the U.S. These findings underscore the importance of cancer prevention and illuminate priority areas to address cancers whose incidence and/or mortality rates are inexplicably rising. Furthermore, the report highlights the critical need to invest in equitable application of proven cancer control interventions, and in discovery for new therapies -- especially for advanced-stage cancers. Both endeavors will be essential to accelerate progress against the 200 diseases we call cancer, and to save lives. https://lnkd.in/ezNDvgMX
