In our latest Collabor-eat by Arcadis, we focused on urban development with our partners and clients. The question of the day: How can we optimize and kickstart a long-term vision via short-term quick wins? During the session, my colleague Jo Van de Sype stressed the importance of smart and sustainable city planning with the incorporation of quick wins to make complex urban projects less overwhelming and to achieve results with a faster turnaround. To give a tangible example, peter tanghe, Project Manager at Stad Kortrijk, shared how the Casino and Conservatory Square project fits into the bigger picture of revitalizing Kortrijk's city center. Discover some highlights in the video below. 👇 #CollaborEat #UrbanDevelopment #CityPlanning

I was on the edge of my seat during the presentation of Maria Vassilakou on the strategy to create a livable and attractive city of Vienna. My main take-aways were: >Facilitating interaction and community-building as a design principle. So, not creating a building or a few houses and then have someone else think of the public space and again someone else creating facilities and someone else creating community. But integrate disciplines from this ONE starting point. That is right up my alley 😄. >With land and financial policies facilitate affordable and high quality housing. I love Vienna's policy on affordable housing and the result of having all incomes spread throughout the city. Diversity leads to resilience! >You need a longgggg breath. This result in Vienna took decades of relatively consistent strategy. And wooow, how that pays off. Being rated the most liveable city multiple times. Inspiring and envidiable!

How can insights from the past help us plan the cities of the future? Today, we're at the Oslo Urban Week 2024 kickoff event, set in the city’s beautiful historic centre, Kvadraturen. As we look toward the future of urban development, it’s clear that we need to rethink how we plan our cities—not just for the well-being of people, but for the health of our shared planet. Sometimes, looking to the past offers fresh perspectives, allowing forgotten ideas to re-emerge in a new light. This year’s theme, “Back to the Future,” highlights how insights from the past can help shape tomorrow’s cities. The photo below is from the panel discussion moderated by Rasmus Reinvang, CEO at OMA and Maren Bjerkeng, Head of Architecture and Urban Development at Aspelin Ramm. An interesting discussion between architects Alison Brooks and Peter Butenschøn and climate activist Andreas Magnusson that explores how to balance modern urban development, cultural heritage, sustainable growth and densification, and the importance of community involvement. We'll be in Oslo throughout Oslo Urban Week, participating in various events and gaining knowledge across professions. If you're also in town, we'd love to connect—don’t hesitate to reach out! #shl #schmidthammerlassen #oslourbanweek #oslourbanweek2024 #urbandevelopment #urbanplanning #urbanism #shapingthecitiesoftomorrow

Join us next week on Thursday 17 October for the event “Closer - The City of Proximity” - an afternoon about the 15-minute-city and the urbanisation of station areas, organised in collaboration with De Zwarte Hond. The event brings together examples from Paris and the Netherlands. Speakers include Mike Emmerik (Independent School for the City), Daan Zandbelt (De Zwarte Hond), Patricia Pelloux (Apur - Atelier parisien d'urbanisme) and Tako Postma (City Architect Delft) Driven by ideals about proximity and sustainable mobility, densification is a major focus in urban planning today, especially around stations and transportation hubs. Research shows that as cities become denser, with more housing, jobs, and amenities, people's mobility patterns shift. Walking and cycling becomes more common, and car use and ownership decreases, which means less space is needed for moving and parked cars. The repurposed space can be used for green and blue areas that help cities handle extreme weather, increase biodiversity, and create more pleasant living environments. Densification also attracts new investments, supporting transitions like building heat networks, creating climate-adaptive spaces, enhancing the housing market, and expanding mobility options. Doors open at 16:00, events starts at 16:30. Tickets are available for 5 euro here https://lnkd.in/esq_gmyu . Find more info on our website https://lnkd.in/eSq7kbca

We're looking at "Sustainable City Development & Vital Systems Under Pressure – The Need For A Systems Perspective In Our Cities." This October, from the 9th to the 11th, we're attending the session of Geiske Bouma (TNO Vector), Maarten Claassen (City of Amsterdam), Marije ten Kate (Gemeente Rotterdam), and Nico Larco (Urbanism Next Center at the University of Oregon)! "This session offers insights from Europe (Rotterdam/Amsterdam) and the US on sustainable city development in connection to vital systems in cities." "Vital Systems refer to the systems in the human body that are vital for survival. The city too has such vital systems: energy, mobility, water and health. Until recently, these systems were more or less taken for granted: they are there, they work, we can connect infrastructures without further ado. Unfortunately, that no longer appears to be true. Vital systems are cracking on all sides and are therefore increasingly determining what (new) development is possible in the city." Interested? Register now to join us at the 2024 Urbanism Next Europe Conference! https://lnkd.in/gEzH-wSa
