ThrowbackThursday #9: 1996 - 1999 🔙 During this period, we made major strides with Pitch Fume Treatment Systems (PFTS). This technology involves injecting calcined coke into reactors upstream of fabric filters, capturing harmful particles and significantly reducing emissions. Highlights: ▪️ 14 PFTS installations across the US, including 6 in the Northwestern states (Washington, Oregon, Montana). 🇺🇸 ▪️ Many of the smelters were older aluminum plants, originally built during World War II. These facilities were required modernization to comply with new environmental regulations. 🏭 ▪️ Maximum Achievable Control Technology (MACT) standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandated that, from October 1999, pitch fumes had to be treated by a dry coke scrubber.
