We didn't go to school for accounting, for payroll, for taxes." 👂🎤 Meet Sound Speech and Hearing Clinic, co-founded by an audiologist and a speech-language pathologist with a shared mission: providing top-notch care for all ages. The co-owners, Melissa Wilson Beer and Jody Vaynshtok, grew their clinic from a team of two to a thriving practice with a mix of local and remote therapists. Can we just NOT. Let me back up a little…. I’ve been a little removed from here lately because I’ve been playing caregiver to the max. To my mother in law staying in my home office post operatively, recovering from her second knee replacement this year. To my mom, who’s been dealing with serious neck issues - bone spurs in her cervical spine are currently grazing her spinal cord and it’s taken us weeks to get in with this specialist. To kids who are either home from school this week, no fault of their own, or because they are sick and running fever so they can’t go into daycare - either way, there are more humans to care for at the moment than normal and it’s A LOT. So let’s come back to this afternoon at the spine specialist’s office: When we (and when I say we I mean ALL of those humans I’m caring for) arrive to my mom’s appointment 10 minutes early, I’m feeling pretty proud of myself. Considering it takes at least ten minutes just to pile everyone into the car, Make sure everyone has a cup of water, A snack, or two, or three, That the IPad is charged long enough for half of the crew to hang back in the car with my mother in law, That the back seat is cleared so I can flip open the third row, To make sure jackets are in tow, And that my delinquent patient of a mother in law *actually* brings her walker with us - Yea, running ahead of schedule feels pretty stinking amazing. So when the front office gal makes an audible comment across the room that patients “usually arrive AN HOUR EARLY to fill out their paperwork”, I about lost my ever loving mind. Apparently “not having the capability to email that paperwork” is a valid excuse in 2023. Give me a break. Give all caregivers a break. This is ridiculousness at its finest. So there we were, tag-teaming my mom’s paperwork (which we completed by her appointment time btw), to avoid flaring her neck injury up all over again 🙄. In this day in age - this should not even be a thing people deal with. There is so much AI capacity to take a patient’s address typed out ONCE and auto fill it into all twenty documents an office apparently needs it on. Or to scan a patient’s ID and fill out paperwork for them and have the patient review and sign. SOMETHING needs to change. I am a very short term, temporary caregiver and this malarkey has me mad - I can’t even imagine someone who has done this long- term. Think about caring for a more debilitated family member… Then do that for years… Then maybe take that scenario and sprinkle in a little dementia… I can’t even! Healthcare system, let’s get it together. If you’re unable to (at the very least) email a paperwork packet to your patients - figure out how to DO BETTER. It should not be this hard for your patients and their caregivers. #wherelifemeetsleadership

Joining is a key intervention used in systemic family therapy. It is about being able to demonstrate to the caregivers you understand them in a deep way, based on their lived experiences. When a caregiver feels understood they can accept facilitation to engage in a new way of interacting. Checkout Dr. Tara Byers' CE Program on joining! An important message this morning! Is there anything more powerful than relationships and connection in Early Years? The article below from Nursery World, published in 2023, highlights the importance of celebrating the uniqueness of childhood, understanding your children's needs and interests and warns of the dangers of inflexibility. There are some wonderful curricular models out there, many steeped in theoretical research but do we run the risk of missing valuable opportunities if we dismiss the chance to bring our own skill-set to the table?
Research-driven practice and ‘influencer-informed’ approaches all have their place, but settings need to find what works best for them
