🚨NEW WORK ALERT🚨
Did Philadelphia Cream Cheese just drop the song of the summer??
Putting cream cheese on everything is a quintessential American pastime. So this July 4th, Philadelphia is partnering with up-and-coming country star Travis Yee to drop an ALL NEW patriotic anthem—”Land of The Cream Cheese”. This original song and music video encourages people to exercise their freedom to put cream cheese on whatever they please, whenever they please.

8/13/75 Great American Music Hall, SFO, CA—this is considered by lots of Grateful Dead fans to be the date of the greatest Help/Slip/Frank ever recorded.
[Narrator’s Note: For those who aren’t big fans, I’m referring to an arrangement of 3 songs, Help on the Way/Slipknot/Franklin’s Tower that the band jams seamlessly (more or less) into one another, and you were very lucky to attend a show and get that run as part of their set.]
In fact, that SFO show in August ‘75 was recorded for the “One from the Vault” album—which a LOT of people have listened to.
My personal favorite help/slip/frank: 5/22/77 Pembroke Pines, FL—if you’re curious, you can find it on Spotify.
Is your business doing, or creating anything that will be talked about 49 years later?
Could it?
Should it?
Why not?
I’m not sure what the Grateful Dead were thinking during those shows.
But if I had to guess, I think they thought a few things that might have business parallels:
1) Let’s create the best thing we can and do it over and over again.
2) Let’s enjoy creating and “putting on the show”. People are paying for this.
3) Let’s save and archive our work. You may never know when it’ll get used later.
This was a niche post. Thanks for making it this far. Sometimes I write these for me!

🏅 I recently had the privilege of attending the Olympics, an experience that has left me feeling optimistic about the future of our industry.
📈 During the Games, I was struck by insights from Comcast on CNBC: "Bandwidth usage per home is growing by double digits, with 70% of that allocated to streaming entertainment content." This underscores that live streaming is not just essential now—it is the future of entertainment. I'm proud that at Broadpeak, we are contributing to this growth sustainably with #multicastABR.
🎶 Reflecting on this, Daniel Ek, CEO of Spotify, highlighted the significant impact premium entertainment events can have on consumer behavior in the post that I share. Following the musical performances at the Olympics opening ceremony, Spotify observed impressive increases in the streaming of French music.
These trends inspired me to consider how similar strategies could be applied to video services. Here are three approaches to consider:
🎯 𝐀𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐋𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬: Synchronize live events with targeted streaming promotions to drive deeper audience engagement.
📺 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭-𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐝 𝐕𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐬: Create dedicated channels around significant events, extending the experience (broadpeak.io is well-equipped to assist with this).
📊 𝐋𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐭-𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐀𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬: Use detailed analytics to track audience engagement post-event and refine future strategies accordingly.
🧠 I encourage you to reflect on these strategies. When we connect at IBC, let’s discuss how to implement them in our work. I look forward to engaging with you there!
As always, link(s) in the first comment.

Amazing to see so many people discovering French music on Spotify after some incredible musical performances at the Olympics opening ceremony. Some cool data to share:
📈 Édith Piaf’s classic “L’Hymne à l’Amour” saw a massive 320% increase in streams on July 27.
🇨🇦 There was also a surge in streams of Céline Dion’s music overall: 65% growth in France and 35% globally.
🤘 And French heavy metal band Gojira, the first metal band ever to perform at an Olympics opening ceremony, added over 300k followers on Spotify since their performance.

Ouch.
Make sure you know you have the correct license to play music in your business.
If you are using spotify, or youtube, its illegal.
A prs and ppl license only covers you to play music outloud, not for the music copywrite.

The snowball is starting to roll, the massive unlicensed misuse of music in the public domain is about to get exposed, and this is only the beginning.
Universal Music Group, says the Kamu Ultra Karaoke lounge engaged in “naked theft and piracy” at its “Sin City” parties by letting customers choose tracks off YouTube that are only for non-commercial listening, according to the complaint in Los Angeles federal court.

A concern that has been overlooked by the music industry is that members of its key demographic - young people - are broke.
This episode of The Town compares the music industry's revenue from the late 1990s to 2014 to present. A significant consumer change that occurred during this time is that young consumers have less money than this group used to.

Further, we are seeing music acts which appeal to older audiences (30 to 40 and above) generate more money through touring and being more popular than new acts.

Basically, I think Matthew Belloni is correct that the music industry struggled to adapt to technological change. However, I think the music industry is also struggling to adapt to a landscape in which younger audiences are no longer reliable consumers.

#Drake is challenging rappers to showcase their skills over instrumentals from #ScaryHours3👀
-
Releasing an instrumental album, like Drake's 'Scary Hours 3,' is a smart move both financially and culturally. It's set to boost streaming revenue, with instrumental tracks appealing to a wider audience, especially younger creatives. This not only keeps the album relevant for various uses, from content creation to background music, but also shows that Drake is always finding new ways to keep fans interested and attract new ones.
-
Drake's lasting success in music isn't just about talent; it's about his calculated business/cultural moves. This reinforces that he's in it for the long haul and isn't going anywhere anytime soon. 📊
