I’m thrilled to share that I have successfully passed the LEED Green Associate credential exam from Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI) / USGBC California marking the first step toward contributing to the future of sustainability by practicing FM in one of the many LEED-certified buildings and/or playing a role in the certification of future green buildings. Many iconic structures in the UAE, such as Burj Khalifa, Mall of the Emirates, Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority HQ, Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Zulekha Hospital, The UAE Pavilion at Expo 2020, Solar Innovation Centre, Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Library, and the Museum of the Future...etc are LEED Platinum certified. While I haven’t had the chance to visit all of them the ones I have visited left a lasting impression, allowing me to experience firsthand the unique vibes and sustainable innovations promoted through LEED program. Change is inevitable and LEED is market driven and it's influence felt across the various professions from Designing, construction and FM. The primary purpose of legislation is to regulate and scrutinize developments. Globally, cities are raising the bar for sustainability, and organizations like LEED (USA), BREEAM (UK), and Green Star (Australia) regularly update their certification criteria. These certifications grow stricter annually, providing benchmarks for sustainable architecture. However, it’s essential to acknowledge their limitations. Not all projects with green certifications are genuinely sustainable. While these certifications are vital, they often focus narrowly on environmental aspects and overlook economic, cultural, and contextual sustainability. Exploring them helps stakeholders improve, but true sustainability requires a broader approach beyond “green” materials or technologies. Some globally recognized certifications include: ✅ LEED Certification: Promotes energy efficiency, water conservation, and sustainable site development. ✅ BREEAM Certification: Among the oldest, assessing performance across energy, health, and innovation. ✅ WELL Certification: Focuses on human health and well-being, complementing other certifications. ✅ Green Star Certification: Popular in Australia, evaluating environmental impacts of design and operation. ✅ Energy Star Certification: U.S.-based, emphasizing energy efficiency and cost savings. These certifications provide benchmarks for environmental impact and space quality. However, they often overlook economic and cultural factors. For instance, a fully glass building in Dubai’s heat might achieve LEED Platinum status, despite requiring significant energy to cool—contradicting sustainable principles. A truly sustainable design would avoid such choices altogether. While certifications are valuable, they must be paired with broader principles that account for economic sustainability, cultural relevance, and climate responsiveness.
