Have you ever wondered why disparities exist within our healthcare system? Why? The color of a child's skin can determine the quality of care they receive. Today, we delve into a groundbreaking study examining racial disparities in pediatric care across the United States. This study, published in the esteemed medical journal The Lancet, reveals a startling truth. The study began with a team of scientists from Northwestern University, Ann and Robert H Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, and the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Medicine. Together, they embarked on a journey to unravel the threads of inequality woven into our healthcare system. The researchers combed through studies published between 2017 and 2022 uncovering widespread patterns of inequitable treatment. From emergency medicine to mental health care, from surgery to endocrinology, the disparities were evident. The most glaring evidence of these disparities emerge from the realm of pain management. Minority children were less likely to receive painkillers for conditions like a broken limb, appendicitis or migraines compared to their white peers. A trend that indicated more care for white patients emerged even when not medically justified. But the disparities didn't stop in the emergency room. Differences were found in wait times, triage assessments and even in the evaluation of suspected child abuse. Developmental disabilities were less likely to be diagnosed in black and Asian children before preschool or kindergarten compared to white children. Latino children with special healthcare needs received fewer specialist services than their white peers. Even in the face of death, disparities prevailed. Black, Hispanic and Asian American children receiving palliative care were more likely to die in the hospital compared to white children. As the study senior author, Doctor NIA Heard Garris states, we now have more evidence than ever that pediatric care in the US is not only disparate but inequitable for a large group of children. To Monique Jindal, policy series author adds, these deeply entrenched racial disparities span broad sectors of US society and transcend generations. The study concludes that overcoming this inequity, a product of structural racism, requires policy changes beyond Pediatrics.
