I experienced this firsthand. Back in 1991, I completely redesigned a sales onboarding program based on what worked in the real world, versus what was being taught. Then I set up the course to include a massive amount of practice and feedback, culminating in three days on the phones, live with customers, while still in training, with me acting as a coach/manager. Since it replaced a program designed by Home Office, they were not very fond of me. (Local management was.) They sent a trainer to sit in and co-teach a few of the two-week programs and to report back what this disruptive Kunkle guy was doing. I really drove the students to perform in class; Bert was a really sweet guy. He got great ratings. Mine were average. In 120 days, my students were outperforming a control group of 5-year employees, by 21%. Vindicated. Now, in hindsight, was I probably a little rough around the edges back then, just coming out of the field? Absolutely. Did I learn to file off those rough edges over the years? Fortunately. But I never softened on pushing people to perform to their best or doing everything I could to help them get there. I have a drawer of thank you letters that were written years later, after the fact. They mean a lot to me.
