Your about to buy a used crane. You brought your mechanic with you to inspect the engine, hydraulics, and controls. Hopefully your mechanic will catch anything that could cause a big repair bill later. But what about the structural components of this used crane? Just like a mechanical inspection, the structure needs to be looked at to make sure there are no issues. We had a client recently have us do a structural pre-purchase inspection on a unit they were convinced they were going to buy. We ended up finding some damage to one of the boom sections that would have cost a significant amount to fix, and a lot of downtime. When you are making a significant investment in a used crane, spending a little bit of money on a structural inspection, prior to the purchase, could end up saving you major headaches later. #craneinspection #structural #crane #ndt

Is your crane operator's cab designed properly? 😨 In the process of operating a crane, the crane operator's cab is crucial for the operator's safety. The design of the cab is also important for the operator's work. If the cab itself has design flaws, it could pose a significant safety hazard for construction. The following can help you check if your cab has a safety hazard. ⚠ 1、The layout of the cab should facilitate easy operation for the driver. All control handles should be within the driver's reach when facing the hoisting area or the direction of travel. ⚠ 2、The layout of the cab should ensure that the driver can see the hoisting area from any position. If the driver cannot see the hoist at specifically designed positions, auxiliary measures should be taken to allow the driver to indirectly see or be aware of the hoist's position. ⚠ 3、The cab should be equipped with a door lock, fire extinguisher, and an electric bell or alarm. If necessary, communication devices should also be installed. ⚠ 4、The cab should not be installed in locations with significant vibrations. ⚠ 5、Mobile cabs should be equipped with safety hooks or other fall protection devices. ⚠ 6、Cranes used for lifting molten metal or hot objects should have enclosed cabs with effective insulation layers made of flame-retardant materials. ⚠ 7、Self-propelled mobile cabs should have limit switches. Person İnjured When Chain Hoist Container Failed at Securing Point What happened? An overhead electric chain hoist container/box weighing approx. 30kg fell around 0.8m onto a crew member. The incident occurred whilst crew were working on adjustment of a heavy clamp used as part of a pipelaying operation. A permanently installed 3.2 Te SWL overhead electrical chain hoist, mounted above on a structural beam, was being used to support the clamp end. One of the securing points of the hoist failed, and the chain hoist container fell onto one of the crew present. It hit the right shoulder/back, causing contusion and bruising. What went wrong An improvement/alteration of the chain hoist container had been carried out locally without proper engineering calculation for the change (the original bag removed and a sheet metal box had been added); There was inadequate engineering/design: secondary DROPS retention had not been considered; There was inadequate maintenance/inspection: the inspection of exterior container was in the planned maintenance system, but it lacked important detail such as fixing point and wear. Actions taken If you are required to make a change to a component, communicate this change with your supervisor/engineer to ensure the correct method and/or Management of Change is being applied; Amend planned maintenance system to include regular inspection of the chain container to ensure hardware (brackets, links, fasteners and other supports) are in good condition and replace any parts of hoist showing wear or damage – BEFORE using the hoist; Check of any similar hoists elsewhere; install secondary retention where required. https://lnkd.in/d_4ANBwV #overheadcrane #imca
