Thanks to everyone from NECANN and my crew at Talking Joints Memo for an incredibly successful 10-year anniversary of the New England Cannabis Convention. Here's a photo gallery from the great Derek Kouyoumjian. But of course, we're not done just yet!
My team is still working on content pulled from the show, from galleries to panel dispatches. And we are also looking for video and audio recordings of panels. Did you speak about something you would like to share with TJM readers? Send it over. Do you have an essay or opinion piece on the topic? Even better - send it over.
And finally, we appreciate all of the kind words about the magazine we made for NECANN, and we'd like to make one for your company too. Please hit up Graham Wilson and me - we'd love to talk about doing a custom publication with you, and we can make it so your business doesn't have to pay at all.

Art Expert witnesses for court
Did you know that Art Advisory Group can provide art expert witnesses for court? In our first year of business, we were approached by several law firms to provide expert witnesses.
We are well placed to do this because we are independent; our specialists have decades of experience in the market; and if there is any conflict of interest, we can just go to another member from our team.
In one case, our client required independent expert valuations to be provided for litigation and related testimony. The case involved a complex valuation of 100s of works of art and objects that required very complex reports to the court. Our team of specialists and support staff worked solidly for nearly 8 weeks to provide reports that could be understood by non-art specialists.
💎 We have provided experts and valuation reports for court in wine, contemporary art and collectibles.
💎 We have the ability to meet tight deadlines.
💎 We have worked with many law firms across multiple jurisdictions.
At Art Advisory Group, our team of 60 + specialists are ready to assist you. We are now working across the market from dinosaurs to classic cars, paintings to pottery.
DM me and I will respond.

The "Golden Turd" Analogy Explained
The "golden turd" analogy represents something that appears valuable on the outside but is flawed or harmful upon closer inspection. Applied to Child Protective Services (CPS) in San Francisco, it highlights the gap between CPS's intended purpose and its actual impact on vulnerable women and children.
Kelsey Parsons: The "Golden Turd" CPS Worker
The "Golden" Exterior
Intentions and Perception: Kelsey Parsons, a dedicated CPS worker in her 30s, genuinely believes in protecting children. She is seen as a caring professional committed to her mission.
-Shiny Role: Kelsey's work is perceived as essential and noble, contributing positively to society by safeguarding children.
The "Turd" Reality
-Over-Policing and Criminalization: Kelsey's collaboration with law enforcement often leads to unfair scrutiny and criminalization of families for poverty-related issues, rather than abuse.
-Bias and Discrimination: Despite good intentions, Kelsey may unconsciously target families of color and lower socioeconomic backgrounds due to systemic biases.
-Trauma from Child Removal: Removing children from their homes can cause significant emotional harm, disrupting important family bonds.
-Lack of Support Services: The system Kelsey works within often fails to provide necessary support services, leading to repeated interventions and prolonged family separations.
Kelsey as the "Golden Turd"
-Golden Aspect: Kelsey embodies the ideal image of a CPS worker—committed, caring, and protective of children.
-Turd Reality: Despite her intentions, systemic flaws like over-policing, bias, and lack of support mean Kelsey's actions can inadvertently harm families. Her "golden" role hides these deeper issues, making her the "golden turd."
Conclusion:
Kelsey Parsons exemplifies the "golden turd" analogy within CPS. While she appears to be a dedicated and valuable protector of children, the systemic issues she operates within—biases, insufficient support, and the trauma of child removal—reveal the flawed reality. This underscores the need for systemic reforms to truly support and protect vulnerable families.

A few days after my son was taken from me a friend of the family sent me this very poorly edited but enlightening picture…
Here’s some context:
This picture was taken from Protective Services Worker Kelsey Parsons social media page. The picture was then edited onto another photo of a piece of human feces that was spray painted gold.
What do you think the artist meant to communicate with this composition?

The art world is a challenging place for professionals. Not only do we have to juggle creating, networking, and marketing, but we have to be vigilant about who has our images.
Every few months, I do a Google search for my name. This time, I found a scammer that stole my image from a gallery site. First, a DMCA Form (copyright infringement) is sent. If the art isn't taken down, my lawyer gets involved.
Artists, you are not only protecting yourself & creations, but your collector's investment and galleries by shutting down art scammers. ALWAYS protect yourself however possible (lower resolution images, watermark I'm multiple areas, lawyer, business insurance , accountant). Baddies love making money off YOUR art.

The BOKEH affect
In the many jury trials I had in my career I was successful at times by ometaphorically using the bokeh effect, a popular photography technique that creates a visually appealing blur in the background, in closing statements to a jury in a criminal trial. It can help in emphasizing the focus on key elements and guiding the jury's attention.
When employing the bokeh effect in your reasoning for a closing argument, consider comparing the clear, sharply defined elements in the foreground that represent the essential points of your case to the intentionally blurred background. The clear elements can symbolize the factual evidence, witness testimony, and legal principles that support your argument, while the blurred background might represent distractions or less crucial aspects of the case. Emphasizing the areas of the Crown’s theory that you can characterize as distractions.
By utilizing the bokeh effect as a metaphor, you can effectively guide the jury's attention, create a memorable visual analogy, and help them understand and remember the key points of your closing argument. This can provide a powerful and persuasive way to underscore the significance of the evidence and legal reasoning supporting your position, ultimately encouraging the jury to reach a favorable verdict. Focusing on how reasonable doubt, can arise from the evidence and absence of evidence, and emphasize the contrast to the “blur” of aspects of the Crown case and guide a jury to see it your way.
