Ensuring clean and affordable energy for everyone - SDG 7 - is essential for achieving gender equality and vice versa. Billions of women around the world still lack basic access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy, negatively impacting their health, well-being, livelihoods and local environment. At the same time, women have a critical role to play in achieving SDG7, but barriers remain. Ensuring access to clean, modern and sustainable energy solutions for women is a fundamental element of a just and inclusive energy transition. The International Day of Clean Energy is an important opportunity to reflect on progress made towards a just and inclusive energy transition and mobilize awareness and action. Energy Compacts are a significant opportunity for all stakeholders - including governments, the private sector and civil society -  to register their energy commitments on the international stage. 📢 Report Release: Global Commission on People-Centred Clean Energy Transitions: Designing for Fairness The International Energy Agency (IEA) Global Commission on People-Centred Clean Energy Transitions has released a report on "Designing for Fairness", which examines how clean energy policies can be formulated to promote greater affordability, equitable distribution of benefits and costs, and enhanced equity within energy systems. At the forefront of this initiative is The Gender and Energy Compact, co-convened by ENERGIA - International Network on Gender and Sustainable Energy, which submitted crucial insights on advancing gender equality across these themes. The newly released document on the IEA website features the Compact's proactive work, which has acted as a catalyst in reinforcing efforts toward #GenderEquality and #Women’sEmpowerment in the energy sector. Great opinion piece by ENERGIA - International Network on Gender and Sustainable Energy & The Shine Collab ⭐ A gender-just energy transition: Why it matters and how to achieve it Power to the people was the theme of a June 25 webinar sponsored by the SHINECollab, whose goal is scaling women-led, community-driven renewable energy solutions for a gender just energy transition. What is a gender-just energy transition, and why does it matter? Speakers debated the unjust nature of the existing energy system, and advocated for a transformational and decentralized approach to the energy transition, and to extractive industries generally, that would advance community-driven solutions. As the world's largest corporate sustainability initiative, the "Forward Faster" initiative was launched by the UNGC on18 September 2023, aimed at accelerating corporate action and investment to meet the needs of achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The initiative calls on global business leaders to take measurable, reliable, and ambitious actions. How we 'Leave No One Behind' in energy access is a hot topic, but we simply can't achieve these goals if women aren't specifically targeted and their energy needs appropriately met.  GOGLA with support from the IKEA Foundation has been working to develop new gender-inclusion guidance and KPIs for productive use energy companies. 🌍Blog Live “Post-2030 Vision: Prioritizing Gender Indicators for a Just and Inclusive Energy Transition” ENERGIA - International Network on Gender and Sustainable Energy, in collaboration with UN Women and co-convenors of the Gender and Energy Compact members (GWNET: Global Women's Network for the Energy Transition, UNIDO, Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL)), has published an opinion piece on the need to prioritize gender indicators in the global energy transition. With only six years remaining until the 2030 deadline for the #SDGs, progress has been too slow, especially on gender equality. At present, #SDG7 on sustainable energy is one of only six SDGs that lack a specific gender indicator, even though the two are closely interlinked. We can correct this gap in the post-2030 energy framework. This calls for: ✅ Making women more visible in sustainable energy. ✅ Expanding the gender lens on energy data collection. This is also reflected when women are in decision-making positions; an analysis shows that female legislators in the European Parliament are more likely to support pro-environmental legislation than men. Also, examples of countries and companies with higher gender equality have better environmental performance. It would benefit all of us to support women in being empowered in decisive leadership roles."
