We Often Say "Meri hi kismat kyu kharab hai yaaar?" We often use this line when we want to achieve something but can't do it, and someone else gets the job or thing they want. I have also used this line many times. But now I have a different perspective about luck. "When hard work meets opportunity, people call it luck." Maybe some of you can't relate to this perspective, but I have one example to make you believe it. During my MBA placements, some companies selected only one candidate from a pool of approximately 100-150 students. We used to say, "How lucky he or she is that from 100-150 students, they got selected." But no, they got selected because their hard work met the opportunity that day, not because they were lucky. So, the next time you see someone succeed, remember it's not just luck—it's hard work meeting opportunity. The Best Job Isn't Always the Right Job! Our values can shift over time, influenced by emotional, financial, and other factors. This is perfectly normal. It's crucial to recognize that staying in a job that doesn't align with your values can be detrimental to both your career and personal well-being. Growing up in a middle-class family, I always dreamed of securing one government job. But I was fortunate enough to have the sweet dilemma of choosing from several such offers. I opted for Company ABC, drawn to its good pay, favorable location, and relatively lighter workload. Initially, the job was a dream come true. However, as the honeymoon period ended, I realized it wasn't the right fit. Despite the good pay and job security, the long working hours and lack of growth opportunities were too much to bear. Quitting a well-paying government job isn't a decision to be taken lightly. But I knew it was necessary to prioritize my personal growth and values over job security. As long as you stay receptive and relevant, it's nothing to worry about. Remember, you don't want to be the frog who couldn't jump out of the boiling water in time! Yesterday, I had a deep conversation with a friend interning at a top Indian MNC. He sounded pretty frustrated—two months in, and he feels like he hasn't learned much. Sadly, this isn't uncommon among MBA students, who often find themselves stuck doing mundane tasks like cold calling, far from the impactful projects they envisioned. The disconnect between the high expectations set at the start of the internship and the reality of being left to fend for oneself without proper guidance is real. But it doesn't have to be this way. Internships should be more than just a list of tasks to complete— When I was interning at the Bank of India, I made a decision to seek projects that went beyond my day to day job Research & Initiative: I immersed myself in understanding the bank's strategic priorities. Discovering that the Bank of India was one of the top 6 PSUs selected by the Odisha government for a critical financial inclusion project, I saw an opportunity By expressing my keen interest and showing my understanding of the project's significance, I secured a spot on the team. 2. Seeking new opportunities I didn’t settle for the routine. I actively sought involvement in complex and high-stakes projects like digital payments and digital transformation initiatives. My eagerness to tackle these challenges not only broadened my knowledge but also positioned me as a valuable asset to the team. The Result 🤔? I was entrusted with significant responsibilities that demonstrated my capability and potential, setting me up for future success. This experience not only enriched my internship but also significantly enhanced my professional profile. You should never hesitate to reach out for their insights, even if you're not particularly close. Ask them about: ▶️Interview Experience: What questions were asked? What was the process like? ▶️Role Expectations: What does the day-to-day look like? Are they satisfied with their responsibilities? ▶️Company Culture: How do they feel about the work environment and growth opportunities? I just finished reading Hacks for Life and Career: A Millennial’s Guide to Making It Big by Sandeep Das Sandeep Das, has been a corporate leader for nearly 15 years, having worked at senior positions in companies like PwC, Accenture, Marico, and BCG. His books have been featured in Fortune, the Times of India, the Economic Times, Mint, the Deccan Chronicle, Business Line, The Asian Age, CNN IBN, and The Hindu. This book by Sandeep Das is like a mini-MBA. Every management student must read. This book covers a lot of topics like GDP, inflation, financial statements, entrepreneurship, personal finance, internships, and resumes and CVs in a simple and easy way. I highly recommend it to every management student. #books #reading
