Get to most out of your workouts by trying to include these three principles 1. Fun: the more engaging and fun the workout is you will try harder and get a better workout. 2. Safe: It can not be understated that doing an exercise you don't feel comfortable with and doing it wrong is bad and can have negative effects on your body. 3. Effective: This is a hard one to judge and is one of the main reasons to have a trainer, but a simple measure for weight training would be judging intensity.
