As Oscar Wilde once said, "Be yourself, everyone else is already taken", so who is Rachel Palmer? 👩 After five rewarding years in a HR generalist role, I found my true calling and took a leap into this incredible role of Engagement, Wellbeing & Inclusion Business Partner for ERIKS UK & Ireland in February of this year and what a journey it has been so far.  ❓ You might ask, what is my job? If you asked my husband, he'd tease about me talking all day and how can that really be a job! However, I call it being inquisitive! 🛣 I'm on a mission to understand, connect, and support our amazing colleagues. My role involves implementing plans for wellbeing, creating spaces for sharing stories, and establishing support systems—all geared toward fostering an inclusive environment. In simple terms, it's about putting plans into action. ✈ My career wasn't always in the HR field. With 18 years in the travel industry, I got to explore the world whether working on cruise ships to inspecting hotels, it was all about learning about the different diverse cultures and meeting people.  🔉 Whilst I no longer get to travel the world, my passion still lies in interacting with people and understanding what makes each individual unique and them! ❤️ Beyond my role, my heart still belongs to travel.  Always deciding where to visit next – it is a big world out there!.  And a word of warning, if you mention travel, be prepared for a million questions – I love to learn where people have travelled to and where they are going! 🗺 Travel, for me, is the ultimate wellbeing reward—a chance to switch off and recharge. ⁉ I'd love to hear from you! Half Time   At the end of 2022 I found myself in a pretty negative headspace with work. I felt like I had been in my role a bit long without much change so had been exploring career options over the previous 12 months. Nothing materialised internally or externally, and I walked away with a few second prizes! After a good break over the festive period, I came back to work with a renewed sense of purpose and a clear vision to get my head down...until I heard about a vacancy for a fixed term role in the Sporting System Team at UK Sport. The allure of working within Olympic and Paralympic sport had always appealed to me, while I had been impressed every time I had met with or listened to members of their Sporting System Team. I thought, 'Why not?!' and applied for the role. I was successful via the recruitment process, thankfully sportscotland agreed on a secondment, and I joined UK Sport in mid-April until the end of 2023.   The first half of my time at UK Sport has been brilliant. I’ve thrown myself into the role in a way that you can only really do when you’re on a short-term contract. I’ve spent as much time as possible with colleagues to learn more about Organisational Health within Olympic and Paralympic Sport and I’ve tried to say ‘yes’ to every opportunity that has come my way. Immersing myself in assessing compliance with the Code for Sports Governance has been illuminating – I’ve been able to really get to grips with how NGBs are putting suitable controls in place to ensure transparency, diversity and inclusion, accountability and integrity are embedded within their organisations. I'm also getting involved on some really interesting work around the governance within international federations which is very exciting and something I'm keen to continue during the rest of my time at UK Sport. The last thing I want to reflect on from the first half of my secondment is around culture. I’ve always found the saying that “Culture eats strategy for breakfast” a bit of a cliché – that’s not to say that I disagree, but in practice, I don’t think we’ve been great at culture within the sporting system in the past so I’ve not really seen it playing a huge role. Since joining UK Sport, I’ve started to change my mind. Out strategic outcomes are part of how we discuss work internally and externally, but our culture is central to it. From a real openness and willingness to check and challenge each other; to our monthly staff briefs from our CEO and Chair; to regular comms about how the organisation are carrying out our work (as opposed to the what). I'm looking forward to continuing my journey in the second half!

In my experience, employees rarely become unhappy or leave solely over money. When they do become disenchanted, it is usually because they don't like their boss, aren't engaged or at a higher level may feel like they have stopped learning. Having a positive culture and workplace environment helps a lot and it also encourages teamwork and communication, which increases their willingness for guest engagement on their superior's behalf.
