Today PhD students are equipped with valuable research skills. However, many programs struggle to prepare graduates for the private sector. Joseph Shaw, Director of Montana State University-Bozeman Optical Technology Center, is trying to solve this problem. Through partnerships with companies, students gain valuable hands-on experience calibrating systems to complete amazing tasks. Read more about this innovative way to prepare PhD students for the workforce in the latest issue of #PhotonicsFocus by David Giltner: https://lnkd.in/giZiPXUW

Want to innovate advanced Li batteries 🔋 🔋 🔋 ? We have a full-time Postdoctoral Research Fellow position at UCL on my EPSRC IAA grant on "Prototyping Advanced Li Batteries Using Scalable Templating Layers". This project will be led by Yaoguang Song 宋曜光 and Alex Rettie at UCL - Electrochemical Innovation Lab (EIL), UCL Chemical Engineering. The project objectives primarily include developing advanced battery prototypes by using scalable thin-film templating layers, extending our technology to higher TRLs for commercialisation. Main duties include: 1) making battery cells for all-solid-state batteries and lithium-ion batteries (coin cells up to pouch cells); 2) making battery cells based on different approaches including cathode coating, anode coating, and anode-free configuration; 3) conducting electrochemical characterisation of battery cells (e.g., EIS, CV, cycling tests) and analysing battery materials and battery cells by various techniques (e.g., X-ray CT, SEM, TEM). Learn more details and see how to apply here: https://lnkd.in/eWxueFvg #allsolidstatebattery #postdoc #batterytechnology

‘𝙄𝙩’𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙖𝙣 𝙖𝙙𝙫𝙞𝙨𝙤𝙧’𝙨 𝙟𝙤𝙗 𝙩𝙤 𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙋𝙝𝘿𝙨 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙮 𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙧𝙨.’ I’ve heard this opinion from many people here on LinkedIn. And perhaps it’s true. But there are many benefits for academic researchers who welcome industry into their research programs. Exposing their students to the environment where most will build their careers is just the beginning. The article below describes the conversation I had last year with Joseph Shaw from Montana State University-Bozeman last year about how collaborating with industry has allowed him to play both the curious scientist and the practical problem solver. 𝘼𝙣𝙙 it’s helped him prepare his students to make smooth and productive transitions into industry careers. 𝘼𝙣𝙙 it’s resulted in the very successful Optical Technology Center he directs. 𝘼𝙣𝙙 it’s developed the City of Bozeman into a solid player in the #photonicsindustry. That’s a win-win scenario for everyone involved! Do you have an industry collaboration story? DM me and tell me all about it! Thank you to William Schulz, Gwen Weerts, and SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics for the opportunity to share this story and help researchers and their students see the value in #industrycollaboration. _______________________________ And if you’d like to learn more about how to build your own industry collaborations, DM me. I had the pleasure and honor to do my Ph.D. research under Dr. James (Jim) Winefordner at the University of Florida back in the late 1980's. This was a large research group (20+ grad students and post docs) working on a variety of projects. It wasn't about a path in academia or a path in industry. It was about learning 'how' to do research. How to write papers. How to apply for funding (and fail...and get back up...and apply again). It was about overcoming fear and presenting your work (posters or presentations). We were given power and freedom to design our own projects (but with great power comes great responsibility 8^). UF had billboards posting jobs from industry and academia alike. And we had visits for job interviews throughout the year, from industry and universities. There was no favoritism that I could see. This is where I learned my love of research...of the scientific method...to become...a data geek (and proud of it)! Data is king!
