Being liked and "building relationships" is overrated in sales. You should aim for being respected as the expert. That's how you close deals. There's plenty of sales reps who are liked by customers and they STILL don't buy because being liked isn't enough and should never be the goal. I'm sure you have probably heard clients talk about the reps that came before you to try and close them and they said something along the lines of "I liked him/her, she/he was a nice girl/guy BUT XYZ... The goal should be: 1. Being the expert in your field 2. Excellent problem finder and problem solver 3. Best of the best. Sales reps at your company and your competitors company don't compare to you 4. Ability to go to bat internally to get your customers the absolute best deal while also ensuring your company is profitable at the same time 5. Caring for people above all Strive to be so good at your job that it's an honor for clients to be able to do business with you, not the other way around. I couldn't agree more, kindness is key - sales teams are simply trying to do their job. BUT... It's also the responsibility of the business to care enough about their customers and their staff to follow ethical direct marketing practices. Businesses need to adhere to data privacy laws - this way your sales team won't constantly be at risk of calling rude, angry prospects or customers. If you're in a region that doesn't require you to adhere to data privacy laws, consider complying anyway. It's the right thing to do. It shows respect. Just saying... 🤷 There is nothing that irritates people faster than receiving multiple unsolicited cold calls every day because dodgy businesses purchase databases instead of putting in the hard work to actually capture people's consent to advertise to them. In South Africa, a recent surge in illegal, unsolicited cold calling (in contravention of POPIA) has resulted in a situation where no one here wants to answer the phone anymore unless the number is saved in their phone book. We have a national opt-out list (which I am on) and still unethical businesses persist in phoning. Can you blame us for being irritated when we're called against our wishes? We're getting (I'm not kidding) hundreds of spam calls every month. P.S. If you are following direct marketing best practice and complying with data privacy laws, and you find an asshole on the end of the line anyway, I'm sorry - you definitely deserved better! Unfortunately a bunch of unethical businesses have made your job unnecessarily hard for the ethical folks.
